We went to Pevensey Castle as we were exploring the history of 1066. The castle was larger than we expected and we were given an audio guide.

The guide took us round the castle which, in spite of its ruinous state you could still see how it was built.

Although originally a Roman fort on the coast this castle has had extensive alteration over the years including the incorporation of a pill box during the last war.

Heavy rain prevented us from accessing one part of the castle; but this did not detract from the visit.

All in all we were there for a bit more than an hour.

I took my 5 year old Grandaughter as we had drive past many times, we are English Heritage members so didn't have to pay which I am glad about, my Grandughter enjoyed going into the Dungeons & sitting on the cannon balls. There are no toilets in the castle and no tea room which is a shame, there is a very small shop but very expensive. It was advertised that there is a vending machine for hot & cold drinks but there isn't, we had packed a picnic & ended up eating this in the car as there are also no picnic benches, I would visit again but wouldn't pay to get in which is a shame.

Nice but not worth an entire days visit. Can actually cut through from back gate , and walk around , not worth paying the extra pounds to walk on the ramparts.

Worth a visit and a quick look around if you're in the area and especially if you get free entry with your EH membership.

We didn't pay to go inside the castle as it had shut for the day, but we parked at the local car park with wc and walked around the exterior walls and grounds on a nice sunny evening. There were information boards and you are able to peer inside the castle so felt we had 'done it' anyway.

I have recently visited here with my parent's and sister and had an excellent time at Pevensey castle. People have been complaining about the lack of facilities like a cafe and toilets but if these people wanted to eat there thay should have brought a picnic and if they need the toilet it is only a small walk to a pub across the road. The audio guide is detailed and gives an insight into the lives that were lived at Pevensey and the castle itself. To summarise if you like things like English heritage or the National trust this will be an interesting place and may be worth the visit.

Not a great deal of it left! Built in 1066 so not surprising. Interesting site. Lots of story boards to explain its history

The outer walls are Roman and built in an unusual oval shape. We enjoyed the inner bailey which was from a later period .You can walk through the outer bailey as it is a public footpath. The whole place is fascinating and very important historically because of the links to the Norman conquest.

If you visit a number of the historical sites in the area you can begin to get the bigger picture of the whole early Norman invasion. Not a huge amount of castle left but worth a visit.
It's in a very nice location.

William I landed at Pevensey and built temporary fortifications inside the old Roman fort. Traces of the Roman walls can still be seen. After William's successful conquest a full scale Norman castle was built within a corner of the fort. The ruins stand today, it was subjected to stone robbing for centuries, and using the audio tour one can get a good picture of the history and importance of the site. Definitely worth the visit!

Pevensey Castle is well worth a visit. Apart from being the landing place of William the Conqueror its history goes back to an origin as a 'Saxon Shore' Roman fort and right up to WW11 when it was part of the coastal defences. This is related by way of an audio tour and information boards. There is no car park but parking is available nearby.

Our visit to Pevensey Castle was lovely, and it is extremely picturesque. An important historical site, it doesn't get nearly as much attention as the nearby Battle Abbey, and yet its position in the history of the Norman invasion of Britain is very important.

Sadly, the dungeons were flooded the day of our visit, so we couldn't go check them out, but otherwise a really lovely location.

I enjoyed it as a time out, it was relaxing and an unstressful visit. The shop was small and friendly, the audio was informative.

I took her who must be obeyed here by accident. She wanted some where to get her split ends sorted out. So ended up driving around the damn countryside for hours trying to find a cheap hairdressers. We did not find one, but we did find this big old wall which turned out to be a Castle. Honestly we could not believe it. What was also handy was the fact there was a pub near by. So we popped in as she needed a wee and a stiff drink for her nerves. When she was calm we went to the castle. Our first reaction was WHY? Surely the land could of been put to better use? Maybe landfill or social housing? But as I walked around it gave me a chance to sneak off from her and have a sneaky smoke. At the end of the day my dead relatives would of been proud that I took in some history, but it is something I will keep quiet from the boys in the pub.

A great day out to look back at our history. The castle grounds can be visited for free and it is a great place for a picnic.
Once over the drawbridge and moat, you then pay entrance fee. We are members of English Heritage, so was free.
There are no toliet facilities at the castle, but there are some outside by the car park and there is a pub nearby. The church at nearby Westham was open and had some. Worth a visit as great interior and stained glass.
The castle can be done in about 40 mins. The dundegon was flooded when we were there and so didn't see it.
Well worth a visit, but combine it with another place as we did or a trip to the coast. Nearest town, Eastbourne.

this is a lovely place to walk situated in the lovely old Pevensey village . The castle itself is just a shell but you can imagine how it was and its free!

Not somewhere I would recommend as a day out, there isn't really that much to see, the audio tour was reasonably interesting. If in the area then i'd say a 2 hour visit would be enough.

This is English Heritage managed and it shows in the quality of the audio tour which is first rate. Although there is not too much of the internal castle left the history tour is excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Sadly the tea shop outside is now closed

We went on a whim last weekend. The entry fare includes the audioguide, which makes the place really come alive! We had the place to ourselves just before closing time and walked the castle according to the audio suggestions, which gave us a much better insight into how things mightve looked back then!

You can walk around the outside of the castle and read the information plaques without going right inside if you wish. Peaceful walk around the castle ruins.

It was very interesting to be steeped in history, although it does feel as though English Heritage has overlooked this castle for investment (compared to most others visited). That said, the audio tour is a must to really get the most out of the physical structure... We will go again. Also don't miss the church, gaol and courthouse down the road - it'll take just a moment and they need support! Helpful staff throughout all :-)

Pivotal to English history this Roman Fort has a massive outer courtyard with half the walls standing. The inner castle is very much a ruin.
The entry price is a bit steep for very little.

We ended up exploring the ruins of Pevensey Castle as we were in 1066 country visiting Battle Abbey. The history of the castle is interesting from Roman settlement to Norman Castle to Medieval stronghold. However, it is just ruins and there much to expensive for what you get. The little exhibition room is interesting however and make the visit more worthwhile. Also, they only had audio guides in English which in this day and age is not suitable, especially when charging people. Recommend if you are in the area but I wouldn't recommend going out of the way to visit it.
