I visited here at the weekend with my teenage son and even he was impressed with the audio presentation of the castle. I thought the audio guide was very informative and made it easier to imagine life in the castle. A very interesting visit.

So much history all wrapped up in an audio tour!

Great day out for all the family spent hours just wandering around listening to the audio tour giving you lots of information.

We revisited Pevensey Castle and it was just as enjoyable second time round. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I found it good value for money, especially as under 5's are free. Our son loved running around the grounds and climbing up to the top of the castle. There is also a lot of the original roman wall left and we managed to access the castle easily with a buggy. It is also a good idea to bring a picnic on a hot day. Well worth the visit, you won't be disappointed!

Always wanted to visit this Castle and have just done so. The Castle itself and the history with it is amazing. You need to hire the audio tour to get the full impact. The day we went was very hot, to picnic in the grounds would have been delightful. It does cost £2 to park for the day, but if you park on one of the side roads in Westerham (adjacent to the Castle) it is free.

However I do have to moan. The English Heritage sign as you first enter the Castle grounds tells you of 'free audio, toilets, cafe, shop, exhibition' and the opening hours - no mention at that point of any fee to pay. I am not in any way begrudging an entrance fee, it's just the way it has been done! The audio tour is not free, you have to pay an entrance fee to get it, there is a small but interesting exhibition, the toilets are in the car park ten minutes away, there is no cafe - just a vending machine in the Gatehouse - which is very small and if it's raining you would have to find somewhere under cover to have your drink and the only seat is outside, the tiny shop is in the Gatehouse too.

English Heritage please be honest with your signage and tell people as they enter what it will cost, why try and hide it? Have the 'cafe' and toilet sign painted out. It's £5.50 to look around and this includes the audio tour, there are concessions - so now you all know!

While being on holiday in this area we have learnt a lot about 1066 and all that. Apparently it was at Pevensey that William the Conqueror first landed. Although there are larger castles in the area Pevensey therefore becomes more interesting. Worth a visit

Beautiful surrounding area and large
ruin with ancient walls enclosing it
I would not have wanted to pay the
full admittance price or go there on a
wet day as it is very open to the elements
But to sit on a scorching hot day and
Just enjoy the beauty and peace of the place made a lovely outing

This is an English Heritage site. Parking is in the big public car park across the road – there is a fee to pay every day of the year (£2). We didn’t pay to enter the castle as we have membership, but the adult price was £5.50. A free audio tour is available which is well worthwhile as it explains more about the castle than you’d pick up just by wandering around. It’s an interesting place with historical significance over many centuries and, with the audio tour, takes about an hour and a half to walk around. There is no café or tea room but there is a pub across the road that does tea/coffee and cakes.

Not to be missed. The audio guide is imperative. Go down the steps into the wet dungeon. Take a picnic and enjoy the grounds that surround the castle. Try to work out where the sea was and where the walls were in relation to the keep. Note how it was modified for WW2.

Its a strange set up you can visit the outer walls and go inside the gate way before paying £5 per head for adults. Good walk around inside although not a lot to look at . Good views from the top towards the sea.
The lack of a good place to eat or get drinks is dissapointing only a few bit in shop inside teh castle and a Ice cream van outside.

Adults will "feel" the history as you pass through the castle but young children may not. However the beach is just down the road so...

A lovely walk around the castle and the beautiful church of St Nicolas. An interesting village, but there was nowhere open for a cup of coffee: two pubs closed at 11.00 am on a Saturday and the quaint coffee shop near the castle was no longer there - missed opportunities.

Although expensive it was good to walk round and envisage all that went on from 1066 upwards.
The grounds are very well tended and the staff very knowledgeable and cheerful which in this day and age makes a visit anywhere a joy.
The castle was of course built on top and extended a previous Roman Fort, about the only medieval castle to be laid siege to and surrendered twice.
Unfortunately as with all our great castles it has fallen into almost complete disrepair and I should think that any hopes of restoration are way beyond any ones dreams which is a great pity because it of great historical interest and value to the history of the land.
There is a shop which is nor too well stocked as it is quite tiny but what is there seems to be of better quality than the normal run of tourist tat.
So the conclude, anyone with an hour to spare and has a good imagination please go to the castle sit or lay in the sun and let your mind take control and go back in time.

Really interesting visit - much larger than expected.
Having visited Battle Abbey recently, getting a much better idea of how William invaded successfully in 1066.
Well worth a longer visit than the hour we had to spare - and it was the very cold end of a cold month!

I am very lucky that a family member lives nearby, the location is easy to get to from Eastbourne town centre no. 99 & then purely a 3-5 min walk .
The castle is what it is seminal point of English history ,I love castles & follow the road round the United Kingdom gawking as my much as possible, this place I love 4 it's immense scale & the bench in the inner Bailey to read books in peace, yes the keep is knackered yet I encourage visitors to think outside the box & venture inside the Norman edifice that stands use the commentary available & enjoy.
There is much is Sussex yet this place despite being a ruin should be we with the right thought process inspire & encourage greater visitation of our beautiful Kingdoms past.

We haven't been inside the actual castle as we thought it was a little expensive for such a small site, however we just love walking through the grounds inside of the castle walls with our dog and enjoying the historic and beautiful views and atmosphere. The information plaques around the grounds provide a good insight and it is amazing to think that the sea used to be right up at the level of the castle!

Apart from the ancient castle walls there is little else to see and the gift shop is very limited. Good for a pleasant walk through the grounds

As you walk around the castle you can almost feel the people from a thousand years ago walking with you. Not a lot to see but the atmosphere is great. Also near Normans Bay beautiful.

Cant quite understand people saying its 'dilapidated' or 'nothing much to do'. It seems to me people need to be spoon fed their experiences rather than taking in the fabulous historic feel of the place. You can look out at each point of the castle ruin and imagine the invading hordes (of various centuries) advancing towards you. The voice acting and information of the headsets was good and the grounds themselves a pleasure to explore.
Yes, it doesn't take that long to walk around and good weather helps (though an overcast sky gives a certain brooding intensity to it) but if you just breathe in the history and let your imagination wander, then this is an experience that will richly reward you. Love it.

Pevensey Castle is a good day out for the family. Spend a couple of hours exploring the ruins and displays. Take a picnic, or eat at one of the local cafes. As you'd expect, lots of uneven ground and stone steps: better to have a baby carrier than a buggy. Best in good weather.

Although this castle is not in perfect condition, I like to visit it because English life as we know it, started there with the arrival of the Normans (and my ancestor) just before the Battle of Hastings in 1066. One can imagine the top brass living in the main part of the Castle, and the ordinary people living in their huts in the grounds, then going out of the gate to conduct everyday chores on the surrounding sea and land. so do not just look at it as a relic of the past, try to think back nearly 1,000 years to early life, and back further nearly another 1,000 years when the Romans arrived and set up the original fort. The sea was all around and this was just a smaller area of higher land.
DO NOT query (as a US visitor asked) "why did they build the castle so close to the road"? It was a natural harbour then!
Go and enjoy a walk in the grounds and let your mind wander!
