5 Questions You Should Consider Before Ordering a Skip

Ordering a skip can seem like a daunting task, especially if it’s the first time of needing one. Below are the most important questions to consider before ordering a skip.

How do I find a good skip company?

With so many companies all advertising a similar service nowadays it can be hard to know which the best one to choose is. Unfortunately, simply opting for the cheapest doesn’t always pay off. Cowboy skip companies will often charge low prices because they fly tip the waste instead of paying to get rid of it legally. Apart from being against the law this will also only add to everyone’s Council tax bill! A good legitimate skip company will normally have its own licensed Waste Transfer Station which will be regulated by the Environmental Agency.

What happens to my rubbish once it’s taken away?

Once your waste has been collected the three main outcomes that can happen to it are:

It will come back to a Waste Transfer Station where it will be thoroughly sorted to recycle as much of it as possible. Skip companies with a big commitment to recycling will do this.

It will be taken to landfill. The skip company will have to pay the tax on this. Unfortunately, landfill space is limited in the UK so it is important we try to keep this to a minimum.

Cowboy skip companies will fly tip the waste in the countryside or another ‘deserted’ place.

How does this affect me?

Legally you have what is called a ‘Duty of Care’ to be responsible for your own rubbish. So if a Cowboy skip company fly tips your waste, in the eyes of the law, it’s YOU WHO IS RESPONSIBLE. Therefore you need to know who is collecting it and where your rubbish is going. A reputable skip company will give you something called a Waste Transfer note providing this information.

Can my skip go on the road outside my property?

Yes, it can. However, you will need to obtain a permit from the council and there will be an extra cost. This is not uncommon though and a good skip company will organise this for you, all though you may have to allow a couple of extra days for delivery.

What size skip do I need?

Skips come in a whole range of sizes and choosing the right one can be tricky, especially when you have not had one before. Most good skip companies should have a sizing guide you can view to help decide what the best size for your requirements is. You can check out Haulaway’s by clicking the following link Click Here.
