Council approves seafront lights replacement

Cabinet councillors last night (Monday, 16 March) agreed to invest in restoring lighting along Eastbourne’s popular seafront.
Eastbourne Borough Council is responsible for the festoon lighting and promenade lamp columns along the 1.5mile stretch from Western Lawns to Fisherman’s Green.
Underground faults put large sections of this lighting out of action and a temporary fix was found using additional cabling and lighting.
Councillor Jonathan Dow, Cabinet member for Climate Change, said: “Seafront lighting is important for night-time safety as well as to preserve the charm of our promenade.
“We are investing to ensure these lights are permanently reinstated and reduce future maintenance costs.”
A programme of repairs will be undertaken with phase one replacing all underground cabling between the pier and the Wish Tower. Lamp columns along the Middle Parade will be repaired or replaced with new columns in keeping with the existing style.
Phase two will focus on the lights between the pier and Fisherman’s Green.
Energy efficient lighting will be used to replace existing halogen and sodium fittings for the initial phase.
Councillor Dow added: “This means lower energy consumption which contributes to our commitment to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, as well as longer lamp life which will reduce running, installation and maintenance costs.”
The work is being scheduled to minimise disruption during the busy summer.
