Eastbourne joins global effort to leave cars at home for day

Eastbourne is preparing to mark World Car Free Day with activities aimed at reducing air pollution and traffic in the town.
Eastbourne Schools Partnership is leading the initiative with support from the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Steve Wallis.
People are being encouraged to leave their cars at home for the day on Tuesday, September 22, and use alternative modes of transport such as walking or cycling.
Meanwhile, four roads will be closed to traffic in parts of Devonshire, Old Town, St Anthonys and Upperton at different periods during the day, to further inspire people to go on foot or use pedal power to travel to work or school in safe and pollution-free surroundings.
The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Steve Wallis, said: "I'm delighted Eastbourne is joining other towns and cities around the globe on World Car Free Day in allowing people a glimpse into life without the noise and pollution of vehicles.
"I will be spending the day walking to all areas of town and invite as many residents as possible to join me in enjoying our wonderful environment on foot or on a bicycle. We hope this will become an annual event that grows bigger year-on-year."
This comes just a week after the launch of Beat the Street, challenging people to see how far they can walk, cycle and run over seven weeks.
Thomas Nevill, from Eastbourne Schools Partnership, added: "It has been a real pleasure working on this project, I really do hope that young and old get involved and spare the town of congestion and pollution for just one day! I thank all those who have helped me in bringing Car Free Day to Eastbourne."
