We’ve spoken before about ‘doing your 90 minutes’.
And there’s no doubt that a L-O-T of businesses have moved forward when using them effectively because the business owner (that’s you!) has focused on doing at least some of the important stuff.
How we maximise our productivity is the perpetual conundrum for all entrepreneurs.
If we can get more of the right stuff done and executed, we make more progress.
But there’s always the dreaded ‘day-to-day’ pulling us back.
In essence there are TWO HATS for productivity.
When I’m clearing my inbox, critiquing marketing, cooking lunch, these are chores.
We all have to do chores.
Chores are the backbone of productivity.
We can check ‘em off, measure ‘em and see ‘em stacked up.
Finding a way to do your chores more productively is definitely helpful. But it’s not what your 90 minutes are for.
The other hat for productivity looks very different.
This is the Hat of Initiative.
Finding a new problem to solve.
Looking for new tools.
Asking questions when you’re not even sure if there’s an answer.
Launching a new project or campaign that might not work.
When we come into work, diving into the bottomless pit of chores is tempting.
Because we’re comfortable doing chores.
They’re easy.
It makes us feel productive to ‘do work’, and we feel good as the list is ticked off.
But doing chores doesn’t move us forward.
One of our colleagues’ cures for writer’s block is to get his PA to literally lock him in his office.
With no chores to do, no emails to answer. There’s nothing for him to do other than write the ‘thing’ and until he’s written it, he can’t come out.
He and I learned a long time ago that it’s really hard to wear two hats at once.
And that’s what your 90 minutes is really all about.
90 minutes to wear the Hat of Initiative…
