In line with the Sussex Cancer Fund ethos of making treatment more bearable for patients receiving treatment, we recently bought a freezer for the Haematology/Oncology Day Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. It is often the simplest of solutions that have a big impact.
The freezer is now located in the staff area but is for use by patients and staff. Having chemotherapy can often leave patients feeling nauseous, ice chips may help, can be soothing, and help keep up hydration. They may help to prevent oral mucositis or mouth sores associated with high-dose chemotherapy. Having the freezer close at hand means that patients can have access to ice chips.
