I am proud to announce that I have recently been awarded the prestigious Companionship of the Society of Will Writers (CmpnSWW), recognising my long and distinguished service since joining the Society 24 years ago. Out of the 1,700 members, there are currently only four Companions, making this a true honour.
The award was presented to me by Anthony Belcher, the Director of the Society (he’s the tall one!), at their annual conference in Derby. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Sussex Regional Chairman, organising an average of 11 regional training meetings each year. During my time as Chairman, I’ve been involved in key discussions with the Office of the Public Guardian ahead of the launch of Lasting Powers of Attorney. These meetings have also welcomed many distinguished solicitors and Will Writers to share their expertise with our members.
Personally, I feel strongly about the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA). These legal documents ensure that, if misfortune strikes, your loved ones can make decisions on your behalf without the need for the Court of Protection to get involved. This is especially critical if you're over 18, as without LPAs, even close family members like your parents or spouse would need to seek court approval to manage your finances and welfare. It’s a sobering thought, but even young people can experience accidents, strokes, or other health issues.
Wills, while important for your loved ones, are only part of the story. Lasting Powers of Attorney are essential for your own protection.
