I have recently had a week off and we decided to take on a garden renovation!
We needed to first remove the existing patio so hired a 3-yard skip which we filled completely with slabs. By having a 3 yard specifically for slabs it saved us money because the hardcore price on a skip is cheaper than a skip for ‘general waste.’ The price is cheaper when it is all one waste type and also when it is all hardcore/concrete as this is recycled and used to make a recycled aggregate.
Once full we then had this skip collected and a 6-yard skip delivered as it was time to start taking some soil out. The 6 yard is the largest size skip we could get for soil due to the weight of the skip when it’s full. We filled this up nice and quickly so were soon able to order an exchange for another 6 yard which we hoped would hold all the soil we were removing from the garden.
Unfortunately, we really under estimated how much soil we needed to remove and needed another 6 yard after filling the second one up in a few hours… with the help of some willing parents! In hindsight, we should have judged it better and ordered a grab lorry to take the soil away. This would have been cheaper and would have saved lots of time and effort as we could have tipped the wheelbarrows full of soil onto the front garden for the grab lorry to remove rather than struggle to lift the full barrows into the skip!!
We did get all the soil out in the end and are now looking forward to having our lovely new patio laid!
