The Association put on its very first exhibition at the Friends Meeting House in terrible storms. Today, under its new name The Society of Eastbourne Artists, it has close to 200 members and a following around the world through Facebook. The Society is run by a dedicated committee and is a lively and thriving hub for pleasure painters to professional artists alike. The aim of the SEA is to encourage all artists, to help provide a friendly support network whether it be for companionship, advice, education or to promote the sale of artists work.
Member’s evenings are held at the Lansdowne Hotel on the 3rd Friday for ten months of the year. These include demonstrations from professional or semi-professional artists in a variety of mediums and genre, a memorial lecture and a critique. Framing products at reduced prices are also on sale. Guests are always welcome from 7p.m onwards with £4 payable on the door. Once a year members and their guests are invited to participate in an outing to a place of interest and an annual three course meal at the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club.
Membership entitles free entry to all the member evenings as well as entering and selling in exhibitions. The Society holds a minimum of two exhibitions per year and frequently more. These are held in various venues around the town including the prestigious Assembly Rooms at the Town Hall. Since 1997 The Society has supported local charities with revenue from these exhibitions. Most recently these have included The Talking Newspaper, Queen Alexandra Cottage Homes, St Wilfred’s Hospice to name but a few.
2016 is The Society’s 70th Anniversary and a very special program of events is being planned. We have booked some exceptional demonstrators and intend to raise the profile of our exhibitions. To become a member before March 2016 the cost is only £20 and will last until renewal in March 2017.
