Not like other 'stately homes', but a modern college campus inside an old building, restored in part, largely renovated inside. That said, a very interesting, informative and entertaining guided tour is well worth the price. Tours have to fit in with the academic use of the site. If buildings are not your thing, the extensive grounds are very pleasant with some well presented formal gardens. Not suitable for huge numbers of visitors but cafe, visitor centre and facilities are very good for their size.

Very nice garden. The tour was a bit crowded so couldn't hear much of the tour guide, also not enough time in the castle. Some free time to take photos would have been nice as well as opportunity to see more rooms

There's free parking here, a lovely café/ tea room, and an art shop staffed by local artists. The grounds are extensive, with forest walks, lakes, a folly and formal gardens too. There are some extremely old trees lining the path and there are large pieces of artwork dotted around the grounds. The castle itself looks stunning from the outside. It is part of a university now. It's possible to look round with a guide (seasonal), they talk about the history as you go around. However, the inside has barely any historical features left. That said, it's still worth a visit especially for the gardens and grounds.
