This is one of two Shearings/Bay hotels in Eastbourne. It is well situated right by the Carpet Flower Gardens, and about 100 metres from the pier. Its grade 2 listed facade is one of Eastbourne's landmarks. Most rooms have been re-furbished recently, and are of a good standard. Their staff are friendly, and there was average entertainment each night we stayed. The meals served were of a good standard. Bar prices were fair, and the general amenities were OK. There are 2 lifts, but often one was not working.
Parking around Eastbourne can be difficult, but there is a small hotel car park for about 30 cars, which you have to book in advance for £5 a night. But you can also park outside the hotel for £1 a day, using a council parking permit available at reception on request. I would recommend for a short break. We stayed for 3 weekend nights on half board, booked directly with Bay Hotels for £35 pppn.

We had a brilliant stay at this hotel. Staff were brilliant. Didn't see the manager though the staff were taking charge. Pedro was absolutely brilliant and rally looked after everyone including maintenance. Food was great and the room was fine everything clean and tidy. A lovely sea view from our room which was brilliant. No entertainment the first night but we made our own up with our coach party. Entertainment the next 2 nights was fine. Arranged our own bingo and won every night.

Had a 4 night stay in this hotel. Enjoyed it, no problems. Staff all helpful. My single room looked fairly recently decorated, the bed felt like a new one. There was tea making facilities and a hair drier which I wasn't expecting.

This old hotel has an air of historical majestic splendour, both from its impressive imposing seafront location to its lavish interior. The large ornate lobby and dining rooms, have high ceilings with beautiful mouldings and classic chandeliers. The decorative condition and preservation of the front interior of this listed building, is impressive.
Regrettably parts of this building have been neglected, but some renovation is still in progress which does affect some floors to the detriment of visiting customers.
The building upgrade and plumbing has had a detrimental effect on water pressure on the fourth floor, and was a major disappointment to us in our room 430. This medium sized bedroom was very clean and in good decorative order. The only other problem was a broken blind in the bathroom along with the very low shower pressure. On the second night we had to shower with tepid water temperature as well. We reported these issues to reception, but it appears to be a known difficulty at times of high demand.
The only other negative issue we had with our stay was the poor (charged) parking facilities. This is located at the rear of the hotel, via a narrow one way road. Had we not telephoned the hotel before our arrival, we would have found it very difficult to find. We were also informed that on a Friday, a locked chain is placed across the entrance to the parking area. To gain access we needed to go through the rear entrance (via an intercom electronically operated door) and go to reception for them to unlock the chain link. Once we had gained access to this uneven waste ground, we found that the car park was full but managed to squeeze our car in at the end of a row of parked cars. It also had builders vans taking up some of the spaces. At reception we heard other people complaining of not being able to find a parking slot.
On a more positive note, the food was of a very good standard for a three star hotel. The three course dinner menu was varied, tasty, hot and well presented. However we were never offered coffee after our meal, as listed. The quality, quantity and selection were also very good for breakfast. The cleanliness of the dining room area and utensils, were exceptionally good. Our waitress Timi (hope I spelt this correctly) was excellent. She was attentive, polite and caring for her customer’s needs.
A final thank you must go the outstanding customer care service provided by Mary and Dion at the reception desk. They both dealt with our complaints professionally and calmly. I was also very impressed with how skilfully they processed a large influx of multiple coach parties.
The last night of our memorable two nights Shearing’s week-end break, was spent listening to some really good live music. Unexpectedly, we also had four free drinks each. Overall a very good value experience for my wife and I. If it were not for the negative issues raised, we would have elevated our experience to excellent.

Very enjoyable food not bad could be better they are doing the rooms up slowly,
For the older person, over looks the front.
Would I go back problaly. You only go back if it fits in a price range.
But if you stay at the Hilton, don't go.

Long weekend in Eastbourne with Shearings, staying at this hotel. Hotel is a bit tired, but had a newly refurbished, spacious room on the third floor with a sea view close to the pier and overlooking the flower gardens. Beautiful weather all weekend. Anything lacking in the hotel was made up for by the helpful, friendly staff. Very welcoming from arrival to departure. Food was basic coach excursion fare, but there are many good restaurants in Eastbourne.
