The Christmas season has always been a favourite time of year for the whole family to get together. There's so much happening in Edinburgh at this time of year for children and adults alike.

How about a trip to the theatre? It may not be your normal choice of entertainment, but we can highly recommend a couple of shows on at the moment....

This year, The Lyceum theatre is delighted to present C.S. Lewis’ timeless classic The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Step through a dusty wardrobe and into a snowy landscape filled with thrilling adventure. Meet the majestic Aslan, the loveable Mr Tumnus and his fantastical friends and join their quest to free Narnia from the spell of the White Witch.

Or how about some pantomime to lighten the mood? Another classic, Snow White at the Seven Dwarves is on at the Kings Theatre. Featuring top-class production values, stunning sets and fabulous costumes, this huge extravaganza will keep the whole family laughing long after the curtain comes down.  Panto at its best!

Or perhaps the ballet? Discover the enchanted, sparkling world of Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, in the European premier of this most beloved fairy tale.

Still ongoing is the European Christmas Market, stretching from the Mound, along East Princes Street Gardens Terrace and around the Scott Monument. You can pick up some unique Christmas gifts, sample some festive foods or enjoy a mug of mulled wine.

You can't miss the Big Wheel at East Princes Street Gardens with its thirty-six enclosed, weather-proof pods, each seating six people and showing unrivalled views of Edinburgh.

Also in Princes Street Gardens is the Christmas Tree Maze at Santa Land, where children and adults alike can try to make their way to the centre and back again. Inside you'll also discover the Elves' workshop, where Santa's little helpers will be waiting for you with a wee treat!

The Virgin Money Street of Light in Old Town has been a huge talking point this year. Running until Christmas Eve, an architectural installation of over 60,000 lights runs along the Royal Mile, from City Chambers to the Tron Kirk.

24 Doors of Advent is a great chance to discover some of Edinburgh's fascinating hidden gems. On each day of advent, one of the city's incredible buildings will open their doors for free. Many of these gems aren't usually open to the public, so catch them while you can.

And if the little ones haven't seen Santa yet this year, he'll be coming to Christmas at the Botanics, in the Royal Botanic Garden. He'll be based in the John Hope Gateway visitor centre but may enjoy a stroll in the Garden too if the weather is kind. He will be available to meet and greet children and parents and pose for ‘Santa Selfies’.

Especially at this time of year, there are so many other events happening. For more details of other happenings across the city this coming week, check out our Full Events Guide.

There are also guides to all the city's farmers markets and car boot sales.

And don't forget, if you know of any great upcoming community events, feel free to tell us about them here.

Until next time, wrap up warm, have a great week ahead, and good luck with the Christmas preparations!
