It’s been a rotten week for getting out and about in Edinburgh. The wind and rain has closed the road bridges, cut off electricity supplies and banished us all to the warmth and comfort of our homes. But it can only get better (surely) so here are just of few ideas to get you out of the house this coming week.

With Christmas just around the corner, what better time to kick off the festive shopping season than a visit to the Edinburgh Steiner School Christmas Market this Saturday. It's the perfect atmosphere for Christmas shopping! Meander through the German Market stalls selling traditional handmade yuletide wares, home baking, olive oil, wooden toys, festive wreaths, advent calendars and much more.

Or if you fancy a bit of live music, how about having a look at the Scots Fiddle Festival this weekend. It runs from Friday to Sunday and will be a weekend packed full of fiddle music, with concerts, recitals, workshops, talks, ceilidhs, open stage, sessions, stalls, free events and lots more.

For a unique way to shop for vintage clothes, be sure to pop into The Edinburgh Vintage Kilo Sale on Dalmeny Street, Leith, this Saturday. You can pick and mix from thousands of vintage items, laid out on rails and in rummage boxes, and pay only by the weight of the items you’ve chosen - £15 per kilogram (approximately 4 to 5 items).

History buffs will be keen to attend the Festival of Scottish History, made up of various events at different locations around the city, from 18th to 22nd Nov.

But you’ll need to be fast to catch the last few days of some events….

The Botanic Lights show at the Royal Botanic Garden will have its last show on Sunday.

Photography: a Victorian Sensation at the National Museum of Scotland also closes its doors on Sunday - discover how the Victorian craze for the photograph transformed the way we capture images today.

And the Edinburgh Short Film Festival will be having its final screenings on Sunday too - a unique opportunity to see a selection of short films from 23 different countries.

For more details of other events happening across the city this coming week, check out our full events guide.

There are also guides to all the city's farmers markets and car boot sales.

And don't forget, if you know of any great upcoming community events, feel free to tell us about it here.

Until next time, have a great week ahead!
