During 30 years of working with Fortune 500 companies, it was made clear to me that what you know is a far second to who you know. No matter the size of the company or institution, decisions are made by key individuals.

Recently, FSB extended their helping hand to my small business given who they know within the Scottish Highland government. Our grant application with the Covid-19 Fund was rejected due to not ticking the standard boxes. Our story was a little unusual but should have qualified us for the grant. FSB was kind enough to ensure that we did not slip through the cracks with our appeal. Due to their direct contact within the system, the case was clarified and the appeal accepted.

We are grateful for FSB’s help and the time and consideration taken by their Highland government contact to conclude this case with a positive result. We look forward to receiving the grant to not only help support our small business but also the 30 other SMEs with whom we do business.

Helpful and open, representing all small businesses
I’m impressed by how open and helpful the FSB have been throughout this Coronavirus crisis so far by clarifying conflicting information, correcting uninformed opinion and making insights and advice available to members on social media. It’s heartening to be able to see that an informed organisation is actively fighting the corner of small businesses and that the government is listening. I appreciate that the FSB doesn’t have a magic wand to fix all the issues that the diverse range of small businesses face, but trade organisations like this do make sure our voices are heard at the highest levels and are critical to ensuring small organisations are represented and listened to. It seems unfair to blame the FSB for Government failings during the Covid 19 pandemic. They are not responsible for what the government does or does not do. Yes there are failings from the government regarding support for small businesses but they are doing their best and making changes when issues are highlighted. I have no issues with FSB and have always found them helpful and supportive.

A massive thank you to Hisashi Kuboyama (West Of Scotland) for all his help in contacting Glasgow City Council with regards to the Covid Business Grant. I had applied on the 24th March and had not received any acknowledgement. Sent another email to the Council 9th April enquiring if they had received the application, again no response. FSB had a webiner on 15th April for West of Scotland members, its was very informative, I asked the members if anyone else had problems with their applications. Hisashi said that the Council were struggling with the volume of applications but he would try to find out what was happening.
He contacted me via email straight after the meeting, he mamanged to find out that they had received the application. The brilliant news is that I have received an email today confirming that they are processing the grant. Many thanks to the West Of Scotland FSB.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers for tireless lobbying on behalf of members. The sharing of accurate information in these challenging times is essential. The documents and advice available as a member are invaluable at the best of times and definitely worth the membership right now. We aren't all getting equal support from the government but I see an organisation that champions all SMEs and self-employed entrepreneurs equally - members and non-members alike.

I’m immensely proud to be one of the 150k members of the FSB and am amazed at what it achieves for small businesses - considering so many are not members yet benefit from the “wins”.
Considering it is completely self-funded (and led) by us, the members; it is incredible what it does.
Yes, there are some businesses that are missing out on the Covid-19 Government support (including ours) but it is not from lack of effort from the FSB.

We have been members of the FSB for over three years. During this time we have received support and advice from our local manager and we continue to benefit from regular updates regarding the pandemic. It is very reassuring, as a small business in a rural area, to have professional advice readily available. I would recommend FSB membership to any self employed individual, especially in these difficult times. Early Days as a new member of the FSB...but so far they have been really helpful. Below is the email I sent following a 'virtual' networking event. I have also put my situation forward re lack of any support from HM Govt as a Owner/Director managed business so I will see what pressure the FSB can exert.

My company has been a member of the FSB for over 20 years. I contacted them 9 days ago to get them to put more pressure on the banks because of the delay in responding to small business owners needing help under the CBILS scheme. The FSB forwarded my email, with my permission, to the Bank concerned. In less than 24 hours I had received an email from the Bank with the next form that they wanted filled in. 48 hours later I had a phone call from the top person dealing with these loans, then more phone calls for credit checks etc etc. Yesterday I got verbal confirmation of a successful loan application. The bank was VERY well aware of the involvement of the FSB and that is why I achieved a fast resolution to my application. Brilliant service. Delighted.

I regard my membership as a Union for the self employed and small businesses, there to advise and protect its members from the shifting sands of government policy, legal requirements, financial uncertainty , global influences and local markets. Somebody is watching my back and putting my point of view over.

I've only been a member for a year and this year have made a commitment to myself to get more involved and it's only for this reason I've not given five stars. As a media professional, I find it tricky to understand why the FSB isn't more proactive in 'selling' itself to local businesses. I now have a better understanding of the organisation's PR strategy so that makes more sense. I welcomed my one to one at the end of my first year which opened my eyes to what I was missing.
