A second golden post box for Olympic winner Joanna Rowsell – in Cheam
A new golden post box has been completed in honour of Cheam’s Olympic cycling champ Joanna Rowsell.
The golden post box sits in Ewell Road, Cheam village, not far from Nonsuch High School for Girls where Miss Rowsell was discovered by cycling scouts.
The gleaming post box celebrates Miss Rowsell’s victory in the women’s team pursuit final on Saturday.
On Monday the Royal Mail painted a post box in Carshalton because she was born in St Helier Hospital.
However, the new post box in Cheam marks the place where Miss Rowsell lives and grew up.
Yesterday she said on Twitter: “Wow just heard the postbox in Cheam village is also being painted gold, just down the road from my old school! Can't wait to see it.”
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said post boxes were being painted where winning athletes were born, and places of importance to them, such as where they grew up or lived.
