Here is an update on the situation at Epsom Playhouse.

The show will go on

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council has provided an update on the practical challenges of operating the Epsom Playhouse during the pandemic.

The council venue was closed at the outset of the first lockdown and remains temporally closed. The size and internal layout of the Playhouse, both ‘front of house’ and ‘behind the scenes’ for performers, cast members and staff,  does not allow its operation while the current social distancing rules are in place.

Councillor Barry Nash, Chair of the council’s Community and Wellbeing Committee, said “While the Epsom Playhouse is a community asset used by local groups, its ongoing function is dependent on large well attended shows. These large shows also bring trade to the local hospitality sector which rely on this custom.

“The council fully supports having a theatre in Epsom and understands the important contribution it makes to the town centre economy and the quality of life of local residents.

“The majority of the Playhouse staff have been temporarily reallocated to other council duties associated with the pandemic. A small team have been rebooking customers and touring companies, to ensure the theatre’s future programme schedule”.
