Stephen Bourne
30 Years of Writing About Black British History
Monday 21st October 6:30 to 7:30pm
Stephen Bourne will give an informative and engaging illustrated talk about his work as a historian of Black Britain over thirty years. He will focus on his first book Aunt Esther's Story (1991), the story of his adopted aunt, a Black Londoner born before the First World War; the award-winning Black Poppies (2014), which focusses on Black servicemen in the First World War and is now available in a young readers edition; Evelyn Dove - Britain's Black Cabaret Queen (2016), a biography of the British born singer who led an adventurous life in the 'jazz age' of the 20s and 30s before becoming one of BBC Radio's most popular broadcasters during the Second World War; and Deep Are the Roots (2021), which highlights trailblazers of Black British theatre from 1825 to 1975.
