The temporary ice rink set up in Evesham’s Market Square last weekend proved a great success after attracting more than 1,000 skaters and first time skaters to Evesham.
Almost 1,100 people tried skating skills on the synthetic ice when the Evesham rink was in action on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. The organisers almost ran out of skates because rink turned out to be so popular
The Evesham town council’s promotions committee trialled the idea this year to gauge the reaction of the Evesham public and it is hoped that it will be brought back in future.
Councillor Martin Hammon was instrumental in organising the artificial ice rink and was pleased with how the event turned out.
He said: “I think it was terrific and want to thank everyone who came along. If we do it again next year more people will come as word gets around. The first four or five sessions were choc-a-bloc.” .Evesham can probably look forward to seeing it again next year- maybe bigger and for longer.
Wychavon Council chairman Councillor Andrew Dyke said: “We had seen these temporary rinks around in different places and people had mentioned it to us so we gave it a trial. I think it’s great, the kids seemed to love it and it’s all about having fun and getting people to Evesham.
Lee Russell, manager of Skate Spectacular who provided the facility, said the ice rink had received a very positive reaction, adding: “We felt very welcome in Evesham and just hope everyone enjoyed themselves.”
Plans are also being looked at to bring a temporary roller skating area to Evesham Market Square in the summer of 2010.
