What can I say? It is now March and I feel no urgency to venture too far from the comfort of the radiator. Even the sheep in the nearby fields don’t look quite as spring-like as they usually do this time of year. Their collective wisdom at the moment might be, “don’t gambol chaps, one false step and we may never be pulled out of this mud alive……”
And don’t give me that ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing’ line. Very worthy I am sure but wrong. Wearing waterproofs and wellingtons for seven days at a stretch is wrong, wrong, wrong! Donning a sensible mackintosh, no-nonsense hat and stout boots on a Monday, let’s say, is fine; the heavens have opened (for the whole long day) and you are dressed accordingly. Perhaps wearing similar on the Tuesday is permissible and you are still looking good but now its stretching it a bit far. By Wednesday that clothing is not appropriate, the hat is drooping and the mackintosh is beginning to leak due to the continual horizontal rain. Plus by Wednesday everyone is miserable and only funky knitwear, multi-coloured scarves and shoes painted with flowers can lift the mood – this is now appropriate clothing. Of course in the present weather that delightful attire could suffer a fate worse than those aforementioned sheep - coming to a nasty matted sticky end.
One solution, when out-of-doors, is to move swiftly from place to place avoiding too much contact with the natural elements whilst searching for the warmest, driest place in town. Down at the Farnham Park Café there is a lovely roasty-toasty log burner in the back corner, a perfect accompaniment to a mug of coffee and a slice of cake. There may also be the faint whiff of smouldering wool. Anyone seen my scarf?
