Adventures in Farnham – On with the sports gear

In the news recently we have been reminded that it is a year on from the London Olympics – doesn’t time fly?  I gather that there are those busy pondering on what the impact has been from the games; has it inspired more sports participation amongst the population?

I checked the Farnham Town Council website to see what sort of sports are open to the residents of this town.  I am astonished.  As well as football, golf, cricket and rugby, there are also running clubs and horse riding schools, archery clubs and mountain biking groups (although who hasn’t been startled by lycra-clad lovelies on impossibly skinny cycles whilst taking the dog for a walk in the woods …..).  There is even a roller hockey association here, not a sport I even knew existed.  In fact, for the couch potatoes amongst us, it is darned difficult to avoid being dragged into some type of sport or keep-fit activity.

And don’t always expect to find a safe haven in your friendly Farnham pub.  Take the William Cobbett in the centre of town, for example; looks inviting enough with promises of local beer and cider plus a Pink Toed Tarantula (not a name of a local beer….yet).  But once inside you may find yourself upstairs where a large room packed full of Pool tables awaits.  Yep, sport no less.  Although to give the activity its dues one can at least sip an ale whilst playing – yet to see Wiggo doing that whilst peddle pushing.
