Organised to raise money to help fund the care which Phyllis Tuckwell provides for local patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer, the recent Wellies and Walkies walk took our four-legged friends and their owners for a stroll around the beautiful Bourne Woods. Walkers could choose between a 2.5 mile and a 3.5 mile route, both of which started and finished at the Rural Life Centre. At the end of the walk, all participating dogs received a doggie bag, while their owners could peruse the doggie gift stalls and buy tickets for the doggie raffle. Sponsor money is still coming in, but Phyllis Tuckwell hopes that the walk will have raised around £3,000, which is enough to pay for nearly a month’s worth of physiotherapy sessions from their of our highly qualified physiotherapists, whose expert support and advice can help patients to live their lives as fully as possible as their illness progresses.
“We would like to thank all of our wonderful dogs and their owners who came along to join us at Wellies & Walkies this year, local vets Cathcart & Winn who kindly sponsored the event and provided veterinary services on the day, the Rural Life Centre for the use of their facilities, and all of our wonderful volunteers,” said Fiona Chapman, Events Fundraiser at Phyllis Tuckwell. “Due to Coronavirus, we may have to postpone or cancel some of our fundraising events in the coming days and weeks. This will have a significant impact on our fundraising income. If you are able to make a donation to help us cope with this anticipated decrease in income, we would be very grateful.”
Every day, Phyllis Tuckwell cares for over 250 patients, relatives and carers, across the whole of West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire. However, as the NHS/Government only covers 20% of its costs, it has to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to offer all of its services, which are given free of charge to its patients and their families.
