Each year during September buildings of every age, style and function celebrate their heritage and culture, offering free access, even if they are usually closed to the public or charge for admission. This year Heritage Open Days are being held in Farnham between Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th September.
Farnham locals are lucky to be surrounded by magnificent historical buildings and a wealth of art and culture but do we sometimes forget it's here staring us in the face? Heritage Open Days are the perfect opportunity to discover a little bit more about our beautiful town and what makes our community special, through tours, events and activities. This year’s theme is “Changing Faces – Buildings then and Now” which draws on the town’s outstanding architectural heritage.
Farnham has a whole host of places to visit during the Heritage Opens Days annual event. Just a few opening their doors to the public include:
Ellel Pierrepont in Rowledge, built in the late 1800's for Watney Combe Brewers, presents some of its hidden interior.
Farnham Castle will be providing tours of the Bishop’s Palace and grounds, detailing its transformation from a Palace of the Bishops of Winchester to a thriving events and wedding venue.
Explore the stunning surroundings of the Victoria Garden built on the old site of Farnham's Victorian open air swimming baths.
Discover Waverley Abbey House, an elegant mansion built in 1723, almost destroyed by fire in the 19th century and used as a military hospital in the First World War. The beautiful landscaped grounds compliment its varied historical background.
Or why not enjoy a new guided walk for this year? From the peaceful St Andrew’s churchyard, enjoy a ramble to The Bishops Meadow where you will see the Children’s Orchard, the wildlife reserve areas and the river. There will be activities for children – butterfly spotting, “Name that tree” and hopefully fish watching!
