How to Spot the Signs of Mouth Cancer

Sadly over the past year, 7800 people in the UK were given the life-changing news that they have mouth cancer. Many of those who lose their battle with mouth cancer do so because the disease is caught too late.

Mouth Cancer Action Month is run by the Oral Health Foundation throughout November. The aim of this charity campaign is to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving thousands of lives through early detection and prevention.

Signs to check for mouth cancer

  • Ulcers that do not heal within three weeks
  • Red-and-white patches in your mouth
  • Unusual lumps or swellings in your mouth, head and neck

Smoking and drinking are risk factors heavily linked to the disease but mouth cancer can affect anyone and can attack the lips, tongue, gums and cheek. So as well as adopting a healthier lifestyle, it is really important to recognise the early warning signs to enable early and prompt treatment.

If you have noticed any of the signs above  or anything unusual in your mouth, please tell your dentist or doctor immediately.

The Elmsleigh House dental team, based in Farnham, check for signs of mouth cancer at your routine check-ups, so it is important to see your dentist regularly for your general health as well as your dental health!
