We are thrilled to introduce Judy McKenzie, a new artist to our gallery but a celebrated figure in the world of ceramics. After a long and successful career in design and printing, Judy pursued her passion for ceramics at the age of sixty, earning a 1st Class (Hons) degree in 3D Craft and Design, followed by an MA from the prestigious Royal College of Art. Her specialisation in the ancient Japanese techniques of Nerikomi and Kintsugi has led to international recognition, including an invitation to exhibit in China and a commission from the Royal Over-Seas League.
Judy's work is a meticulous blend of tradition and innovation. Nerikomi, a highly skilled and time-consuming process, allows endless possibilities for creating intricate patterns and forms within the clay. Judy handcrafts every stage of her porcelain pieces, from colouring to shaping, letting the clay twist and shift naturally to produce unique, beautiful designs. Her pieces are not glazed but are polished to achieve a smooth, tactile finish, reflecting her deep connection to the material.
