A £645,000 rescue package for 45 of the UK's most historic and community minded churches has been announced by the National Churches Trust. The grant to St. Wulframâs will help fund the dismantling and rebuilding the top 40 ft. of the spire.
The top 16 feet of the spire is in good condition; however the next 24 ft. contain rusting iron cramps which are breaking up the masonry. The repair will consist of removing the top 40 feet of the spire, a major scaffolding and construction challenge. The damaged masonry will be replaced with new stone strengthened by stainless steel cramps, in place of the rusting iron ones.
Jean Parker, Appeal Chairperson for St Wulfram's said: "We warmly welcome this grant which recognises the importance of a wonderful medieval building. It is a wonderful boost to the many people who had been so imaginative and enthusiastic in their support for the appeal as it moves into its final phase."
At the end of 2013 Jean Parker, received a copy of a letter sent to Nick Boles MP from the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson after he had written to Boris on Jeanâs behalf inviting him to speak at a fundraising event for the spire appeal. Although Mr Johnson had to decline due to diary commitment he writes 'The spire of St Wulfram's is an awe-inspiring sight, crowning one of the jewels of England's glorious medieval heritage.'
He finished the letter with a hand written note 'One day!'
The appeal still requires donations to hit its target of approximately £500,000. With this the following events are taking place in 2014:
