Met up with Hazel Hodgkinson who runs the outstanding Fig Tree at Barkestone le Vale. Hazel and I have met once before and my view is unshaken - this woman is amazing and unstoppable. She has it all; creativity and intelligence AND she is also very personable. You cannot help but like her (very important in a landlord) .....and her pub. She is passionate about food and I have to say the menus are mouthwatering. First chance I will be taking the family and I cannot see my husband complaining.
For those of you who don't know it, The Fig Tree is a real find. Beautifully and sensitively refurbished retaining all the warmth and cosiness of a local pub where you can relax and eat in great comfort. Follow this link and take a look at some of their interior photos to get the idea.

As the chef at the Fig Tree, Hazel is passionate about meeting the needs of those with food intolerances without sacrificing taste and quality. The demand for her Deli gluten and lactose free chocolate brownies is huge. She also daily makes gluten free bread. For people with food intolerance some establishments now offer alternatives. The Fig Tree is ahead of it's game and I welcome it to thebestofgrantham.
Once a month, on a Monday, The Fig Tree also holds it's renowned Chuckles Comedy Club. The next one is in October http://www.thebestof.co.uk/grantham/events/143966
and a Pudding Institute where you can spend an evening in Seventh heaven sampling the likes of steamed Treacle Pudding, Apple and Raisin Crumble with Calvados and Almond Topping and New York Cheesecake. The next one is Monday 13th October.
