My 3 friends and myself have recently returned from a weekend in Guernsey, where we stayed at the Duke of Richmond Hotel, in superior ajoining rooms with sea views. The rooms were spacious and all are needs were met on request. We arrived at 9.15 p.m. and there didnt seem to be enough towels in the bathroom, one phone call to reception and in seconds we had enough towels to open a shop.
The hotel is up hill from the shops, so I wouldnt advise people with walking difficulties and no car, to stay there.
But we enjoyed the 5 minute walk down to the harbour and the cobbled shopping street.
The friday we arrived there was a yahting club dinner dance on and the following night the masonics dinner was on, but it wasnt noisy, we had a drink in the seperate bar thats like an old ship, but last orders are 11.30 so don't expect a late night, its not that sort of place.
Breakfast was great, you had all the usual cereals, toast, fruit ect. to help yourself to. Followed by a choice of either scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, kippers, smoked haddock with poached egg, or full english. All served in a lovely breakfast room with conservatory attached with tables in also.
It is just a really nice hotel with personal service because its not too big. I have already booked for next october to return with my husband, because I would like him to benefit from the tranquility and pleasing surroundings in and outside the hotel. I have never written a review before I hope this helps.

I stayed here for a couple of nights. My office has booked me into a standard room which I found comfortable and well laid out; wi-fi connection also came in handy. As I had to prepare some documents for the meeting next morning I decided to dine in and was not disappointed (I would particularly recommend their house-made desserts). Restaurant Manager was very helpful with his wine suggestions.
Due to the nature of my business I have stayed in many hotels and the Duke of Richmond is among those I would happily recommend to others.
At the Duke I immediately felt very welcome, the hotel staff was always very nice and friendly. I had to reschedule my future booking to another date and it was no problem at all. Girls at reception, always helpful and attentive, were very efficient.
Hotel is located in a quiet area yet within easy walking distance to the town centre, close not only to many offices, but also to their best pubs and restaurants.
All in all I was very happy with my experience at this hotel, from my point of view it was a good value for money

My family and I had the pleasure of visiting this hotel in mid October for seven nights. We selected The Duke of Richmond because first, we had stayed at the hotel before (albeit quite a number of years' ago) and second, because of its proximity to the Candie Gardens Museum and Art Gallery where we were involved in the opening of the Toplis Art Exhibition and the launch of the Centenary edition of the limited edition of The Book of Sark.

We found the hotel modernised and refurbished to a very high standard. We were able to entertain our guests of varying ages and mobility needs and we were delighted throughout with the professional assistance and service from each and every member of staff from reception, public areas, restaurants and services.

The ambiance of the hotel was comfortable and peaceful - even though the hotel had several large functions taking place (none of which imposed upon our needs and the needs of the other residents). We found access to all areas appropriate to our low-mobility guest and discretion at all times for our visitors and non-resident guests.

The location in terms of access to the centre of St Peter Port was excellent - straight through the pleasant Candie Gardens on a dry day and a short taxi journey home on a wet evening! For the more active, a stroll to the Beau Sejour Centre (utilising the hotel's privileged pass for sport) proved a splendid way to pass several hours.

In all, I believe that I can, unreservedly, recommend this hotel to all visitors seeking excellent service, splended cuisine and peaceful, spacious accommodation.

Our thanks to all.

I stayed here on a business trip for a few nights, since my usual hotel was fully booked. The atmosphere in the hotel was quite refreshing - not stuck up as some hotels on Guernsey who seem to think they are running a Park Lane hotel (wtf?), no calling me Sir all the time (which really, really annoys me) and straightforward service.

It's still within walking distance of SPP, and in a more tranquil setting than some hotels. I liked the fact that the Beau Sejour centre is a 2 minute walk with its excellent sports facilities. Rather than have a half-assed fitness room, the hotel has a discount pass that allows use of the centre on a turn-up-and-pay basis.

The hotel bar is nice and relaxed, and they have a great menu. The food was of a very good standard. Breakfast was also good (and they also have some good looking waitresses at this hotel).

Bad points are; parking, and if you get one of the older rooms the decor. Having said that the cleaning standards are good. Oh and I just remembered this - every evening I got a knock on the door from the maids asking if I wanted any more tea/coffee/biscuits for the in-room facilities. If anyone from the hotel is reading this - can you tell them not to do it please as it's plain bizarre!

The hotel was impeccably clean; my suite was very comfortable; the food was excellent; the staff were very friendly - indeed I could not have asked for more. I have travelled on four continents and there are those who say I am not easily pleased. Well I was very pleased with my stay at the Duke of Richmond and I would not hesitate to go back.

We have just returned home after 4 wonderful days at the Duke of Richmond Hotel. From the minute the taxi picked us up at the airport (hotel arranged this for us) to the time we left it was brilliant. Reception, waiting, cleaners staff - everyone at the hotel were friendly, efficient and nothing was too much trouble. We loved it and would love to go back. Thanks for a great break! PS We went with another couple and they totally agree with us. Bob and Pam Hunt

My family and I have just returned from a wonderful few days at the Duke of Richmond Hotel. We had fond memories of our stay there in 2003, so decided to choose this hotel once again for this trip. We wanted to time our trip to coincide with the dates of the Victor Hugo Music Festival that was taking place on the island. I rang the hotel to make a booking and a very polite and helpful gentleman offered to organise the whole package including flights and transfers for us and which we readily accepted as it saved us a great deal of time looking around and the price quoted was quite reasonable. Within a couple of days the confirmation letter was in our hands!

When we arrived at the hotel we were very pleasantly surprised with the changes we found since our last visit. The entrance hall has been completely renovated – very bright and stylish. More than that they have also added a cosy lounge area where we enjoyed a cream tea. Our superior room also newly refurbished had magnificent views over St Peter Port. Our son, who takes his laptop wherever he goes was very happy to discover that Wi-Fi was available in our room.

Unfortunately my husband was feeling not very well on the evening of our arrival and the porter very kindly served his meal in our room with great efficiency. The breakfast service in the main dining room too was excellent, with plenty of choice to suit all and again our small requests were never forgotten by the friendly and attentive staff.

Once again we had a fantastic time in Guernsey and will be definitely coming back to the Duke next year!

Aug 3rd to 6th 2008

Stayed in The Duke of Richmond Hotel St peter port, Guernsey.
Excellent hotel and my room 300 had refited bathroom
and amazing views and at end of corridor.
Also we had room 502 that was rather poor! old bathroom.
Staff friendy and helpful and in a good location.
Little walk into town and can be up hill. shop across the road.
you can ask for a room when booking.
Lovely Bar and Terrace and a very carm feel to the hotel.
however they do let people have the larger down stairs
room for wedding receptions etc , so can be busy!
overall worth a stay. Also been before to this hotel.

I recently had the pleasure in staying at the Duke of Richmond Hotel during my trip to Guernsey. As this was my first trip to the Channel Islands i was dubious in choosing a hotel to stay at given my previous experiences at hotels in London and Paris. The Duke of Richmond hotel however, exceeded all of my personal expectations of what a hotel should be and was of a very high standard for a 3-star hotel.

I arrived at the hotel later in the evening and received a very informative and friendly welcome from the receptionists on duty. I was impressed as i was offered baggage service and given complete details of the hotel facilities and where to find everything. This was a nice change to other hotels i had previously stayed at on my travels.

My room i was particularly impressed with as i had booked a Superior Sea View Room which i had been told had recently been refurbished. The decor was lovely and relaxing, with the bed being extremely comfortable. I also found the room to be very spacious which was great. The views of St Peter Port, the hotel sun terrace, and swimming pool, from my room were fantastic. I aso found the level of cleanliness mainted by housekeeping to be of a very high level which i greatly appreciated.

The service I received whilst dining in the restaurant during my stay was excellent. Breakfast i particularly enjoyed as the food was great with a good variety made available. The restaurant staff were all very friendly and attentive each time i dined in the restaurant.

Overall, i would definitely recommend this hotel to those wishing to stay in Guernsey. The hotel is ideally located to St Peter Port and local tourist amenities (approximately a 10 minute stroll to town through the Candie Gardens). I would definitely return!

We have just returned from a 5 day trip staying in this hotel. We were a party of 6.

The hotel was excellent, ideally placed for the town of St Peter Port, although at the top of a steep hill. This would be a problem for disabled people. However, taxi fares were only £5.00 from the town to the hotel.

The standard rooms were clean and of a good size. My bathroom could have been a bit more modern.

The staff were friendly and efficient. Minor problems were dealt with quickly and the minimum of fuss.

There was a luggage room available. Once checked out cases etc could be left perfectly safely until you actualy left the hotel.

The restaurant was excellent. A 4 course dinner was great value at £19.95 per person. Breakfast was also very good. The restaurant staff were super.

We would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel in the future.

We spent a great weekend in April 2008 at the Duke of Richmond. There were 12 in our party, we had a very successful, fun holiday. It would not have been the same if the hotel had not been so attentive and helpful.

The food was delicious, we had breakfast and evening meals.
The staff were extremely helpful, especially the restaurant manageress. Nothing was too much trouble.
Our room was newly furnished and spacious, modern and comfortable.

We would not hesitate in recommending the hotel for all ages.
The hotel mini bus is a good idea, the manager helped transport the ladies in our party down to the centre of St Peter Port one evening. A very kind gesture.

We hope to revisit the Duke of Richmond in the near future.
We thoroughly recommend it to prospective holidaymakers.
A big thank you to the Manager and all his staff.

My wife and I stayed for three nights at this hotel at the beginning of June. On arrival, we found the room allocated to us not satisfactory (toilet on a mezzanine floor, terrace direct for the window). This proved no problem for the charming lady on the reception. We were immediately offered a far better room at no extra cost.
The facilities offered in the hotel we found excellent. The quality and choise of food in the restaurant (especially the breakfast) quite exceptional and the service there was equivalent to that of a five star hotel!! Our only regret was that we only booked for three nights! The hotel is well run, with an excellent staff. Thank you all.

Deciding to go to Guernsey for the first time, I found, and booked, a hotel on the internet. I usually read reviews on Tripadvisor before I book but this time I forgot. I checked some of the reviews for the Duke of Richmond and I was horrified – poor service, shabby, poor standard of food, rude staff, old fashioned and inadequate accommodation– it went on and on and on. I really regretted my choice. Even as I walked towards the building, I kept repeating in my head, ‘it’s only for three nights, it’s only for three nights…’

Where were these people staying? Not at this hotel. I travel for work and have stayed in many bad hotels of all star ratings. The Duke of Richmond is at the top end of the three star rating. It was one of the most pleasant places I have stayed in ages. The welcome was warm. My double room was spotless and the décor calming. The bathroom was contained and again spotless. The pool and terrace were inviting. When away, I always choose to dine away from the hotel where possible. The high standard of the breakfast and the dinner menu on offer, however, made me think that if I didn’t find what I wanted elsewhere, I would have had no problem returning for my evening meal.

There were two things I absolutely hated. While the hotel is situated in a lovely location, beside Cambridge Park, the walk up the hill was horrendous. Like many hotels in St. Peter Port, a car, strong legs or a budget for taxis is advisable. And the second thing is the inadequate car park which fits only a handful of cars, parked at odd angles (free parking is available nearby on an overnight basis with only a few minutes to walk – on the flat! – back to the hotel).

Would I recommend this hotel? Absolutely. Would I return? I am already planning a return next summer.

The Duke of Richmond is a three star hotel and it is a very good three star hotel. I suspect that some of the critical reviews I read were expecting five star facilities for a three star rate.

I booked Guernsey as a last minute 75th birthday treat for my Mum. I asked for, and got, a twin room with good view, on half board for her and me (age 49). The food and service was excellent, and the table d'hote varied. The room was comfortable, the beds firm but relaxing. Although a good climb out, there are bus stops nearby, and a taxi only about £5. The staff couldn't haven;t been kinder or more helpful.
Definitely on the list for a return trip.

We have returned from the Duke after another really relaxing stay. The staff are extremely efficient at this hotel and thanks needs to be given to Mr Purtill and Miss Herbert, Manager and Senior Assistant Manager for their consistant attendance to detail. Nothing is too much for the staff and the newly refurbished rooms are excellent. I cannot believe this is only a three star hotel!!

My husband and I have just returned from a stay at the Duke of Richmond where we had a fantastic time. On arrival, we were offered a hot drink by the friendly reception staff, and shown to our refurbished room, 212. This was spacious, tastefully decorated and wonderfully comfortable, enjoying pleasant views of nearby Candie Gardens to the sea beyond. I loved the power shower and the underfloor heating in the en-suite bathroom, and it was particularly useful to have wifi facility to access the internet in the room, although there is also a well equipped business centre adjacent to the reception area downstairs.

We found the staff courteous, efficient and friendly, and the service first class. There is an atmospheric bar offering good value bar meals ( we had the Thai chicken curry and the fish of the day, which were both excellent). We also ate in the main restaurant, which despite its rather dated decor, was spotlessly clean and offered a wide choice of menu options. Breakfast offers a buffet of cereals, fruit and pastries, as well as the traditional "full English" , kippers and so on. At dinner we enjoyed wonderfully presented dishes, including tasty local fish, complemented by a good selection of wine. Superb.

It is a pleasant ten minute walk into the centre of St Peter Port, and the main shops and harbour, although quite a steep climb on the way back. It is a pity that the weather was not more clement, but the rain did not mar a very relaxing and enjoyable break. We will definitely return later in the year and would recommend this hotel to other discerning travellers.

Wow, fantastic hotel! We stayed at the Duke of Richmond for two nights last weekend and were really impressed. Greeted by the pleasant reception staff we were made to feel very welcome from the start. The room was huge, clean and modern with everything you'd expect of a 5* hotel and a bonus was the view out towards the coast. We had breakfast and dinner in the restaurant and the food and service again was top notch.

A perfect location for exploring the charming town of St Peter Port this is a hotel not to be missed!

We recently had the good fortune to stay overnight at The Duke - we are both resident in Guernsey and have visited the hotel many times, it was for this reason that we chose to stay there on the night of our wedding. We also booked in family members and friends, partly because the location was convenient and also because we were confident that they would enjoy the hotel as much as we always have. At the time of booking, the Manageress on duty was very helpful in showing us a selection of rooms (explaining that the hotel was currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment). From the rooms that we viewed, there were a number that had already been completed and were really very nice. We booked a standard room (this was all that was available), not expecting anything other than this, and on checking in we were very pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded, into one of the newly refurbished seaview/balcony rooms. The room was beautifully finished, was very spacious, and had lovely views across to Herm (and other neighbouring islands), the bathroom was huge - and even had underfloor heating (a must at this time of year!). At the end of a long and very enjoyable day, the fluffy white bath robes were very much appreciated (thank you!). The following morning, we met with the rest of our guests and enjoyed breakfast together. Breakfast consisted of a good variety of cereals, juices, fruit, pastries and also the obligatory full English! Olga and her team were on top form (as we have come to expect over the years) - and we generally felt very looked after by everyone. We only stayed for one night, but some of our guests extended their time and thoroughly enjoyed their short stay (for some, the first time) in Guernsey.

Well done The Duke!!! We will happily continue to recommend you.

Stayed here for a single night between Old Government House (with work) and Le Fregate (romantic splurge), and Duke of Richmond was the worst of the hotels. However, it is also cheap so don't discount it. Rooms are dated (the decor suggestive of the 60s), breakfast was ok, and the location is adequate (although a 10 min uphill walk from the town centre). Staff were nice though, and the hotel is favoured by the older generations so if you are of pensionable age yourself, this might for a good bet.

In all, if you're on a budget, don't write this place off, but if you have the money and are willing to spend it, best stay elsewhere.

Booked into the hotel by my Company's domestic travel department for eight nights, I was delighted to find that the Richmond was rated so highly on Trip Advisor and can only agree with all the positive comments. I must have spent two years of my working life in hotels and cannot recall any hotel which has left me with greater satisfaction given that I would always prefer home comforts to staying away on business. Particular mention must be made of its level of service to guests and its quality of food as both exemplary and a credit to the establishment. For a three star rating it delivers in spades.

Though booked into a basic room with no view, it was quite satisfactory and quiet (superior rooms must enjoy a fine panorama); the public areas create a feeling of space compared to the restrictions of more modern establishments where every square foot is a cost; breakfast and dinner met all my expectations and it was interesting to note that the number of diners went from twenty to eighty overnight yet there was no discernable change to quality of food or service. Very commendable. Yet it was the small things which made this experience different. Warm and friendly staff on the front desk; teamwork in the restaurant and friendliness from those involved in room service. Simple things yet often under-delivered in the quest for greater efficiency and cost-control.

I look forward to my next visit to Guensey when I shall request the Richmond rather than have it chosen for me.

We've just returned from a two night stay. I am renowned for being fussy and find faults all too easily. So, here we go…
We travel quite a bit and so I know to ask for a refurbished room if the hotel is getting on a bit. It's sad to read a previous review that the room was tatty and the noise from the party unacceptable. I'm sure had they asked to be moved to a different room they would have been without much trouble if the hotel was not full. But, perhaps with a party going on this may not have been possible.
We had a lovely room no. 302 which had recently been refurbished. It was bright, clean and plenty big enough. It had an enormous bed, a two seater sofa, big bathroom and a balcony with a table and two chairs. A simple thing which I appreciated was that there were load of hangers in the wardrobe. All too often you only get 4-5.There wasn't a double plug by the kettle which meant if the TV was on we couldn't plug the kettle in and had to use a socket on the other side of the room with the kettle on the floor. But this is being petty.
In some areas the hotel does look its age though they are gradually refurbishing throughout. The main reception, lounge, conservatory and bar have been completed as have some of the bedrooms.
We lunched the first day in the bar / outside patio area and the sandwiches were fabulous. That night we decided to stay at the hotel for dinner. The dining room is huge and I found this not very cosy. I thought that perhaps it could be split somehow to make it look less like a function room. But, it was spotlessly clean and bright, with lovely fresh flowers on all the tables and the waiting staff were friendly and efficient. The menu wasn't very exciting; simple choices which could be easily prepared, cooked and presented. Only complaint on the first night was I ordered a sherry trifle. When it arrived it was in a glass and looked like something you'd give out at a children’s party. No sherry and no trifle sponges; just fruit jelly, custard and cream.
However, we did opt to eat in the hotel again the following night as the menu was slightly more interesting. Again, the food was well cooked, tasty and pleasantly presented. Pudding option this time was a cheese board; served on individual boards and that was a nice touch.
Remember this is only a 3* hotel. It is clean, comfortable, nice staff and near to town (albeit at the top of a hill). We will definitely stay here again and hope that the nights we book there are no parties. But, best is to check when you book just in case and ask for a refurbished room. We travel quite often to either Guernsey or Jersey and have stayed at a number of hotels of varying status. OGH has a good reputation and you pay considerably more. St Pierre Park is appalling and I wouldn't board my cat there. It’s a bit pot luck and anywhere can be either exceptional or disappointing. We walked out of the St Pierre Park but others who have reviewed the hotel thought it wonderful. So, it’s just a case of try and see but if you aren’t happy then do speak out and voice you views. Otherwise the hotel won’t know and they will definitely want to be aware of any praises or complaints.

Stayed one night on business found to be comfortable, my room was quite dated but clean. Shower over the bath but with great water pressure.

No wireless only dial up connection. But the service was 5 star very efficient and so helpful.

I only had breakfast at the hotel but it was excellent with a buffet and menu and again good service. Also a great bar with character.
Walk into town is only 5 to 10 mins but quite a steep hill, at least it helps to work off the dinner from the restaurants in town. Definitely value for money and I would stay there again.

I am a regular guest at the Duke of Richmond Hotel Guernsey having made a number of trips whilst relocating my business to the Channel Islands. and coordinating a permanent move to Guernsey.

I am particularly impressed by this hotel, especially, as I have been travelling worldwide ,and have stayed in a wide range of hotels, so I know and appreciate a quality one when I come across it!.

For both the 1). business traveller and 2). the tourist traveller this hotel comes highly recommended. As I am a business traveller, I will " focus" on that aspect.

For the business traveller, the overall management is excellent, including a highly efficient friendly front line customer service reception team, who are both understanding and attentive to business traveller needs including coordinating should you so wish your full travel arrangements ( I always use their services for this) . For urgent business issues there is a well equippped and spacious business centre ( the second best one I have come across in my international travels) where one can work well in comfortable conditions and not some " silly coin operated computer", and backed up by full support for faxing and courriering and other business needs, operational 24 hours a day.

The rooms are extremely well appointed and well maintained rooms, which are regularly refurbished and redecorated offering the highest standard of comforts. Despite being a 3 star hotel, the rooms are a definite 4 star standard with large enuite bathrooms. At this hotel the management are very concerned about the standard of the rooms and this is reflected in the attentiveness to detail. It is to be noted that on a number of occasions I have left personal items behind and these have always been returned to me via the excellent housekeeping team which includes having left a lot of clothes behind on one trip and they even laundered them before returning them to me.

The breakfast service is excellent as it includes a menu as well as buffet though I have not eaten any evening meals as the town centre is so near one can enjoy all the sea front restaurants.

The hotel is well located by a peaceful park less than 5 minutes walk to the town centre and seafront. and also has a pool for those nice Guernsey summers.

A taxi fare to the town centre is about £ 3.00 to £ 4.00. This means all facilities are nearby with a wide range of lovely seafront restaurant, many offering all day service.

I wish to make it very clear that this is classified as a three star hotel in Guernsey offering competitive rates, however I have stayed in hotels around the world which are classified as 4 or 5 star hotels and they do not match the standards at all of this hotel.

I would prefer to be here without a gym and jacuzzi near all these facilities in this charming central town location, in a hotel offering a high standard of accomodation and service, than in a poky 4 star hotel, which has been over rated, as it has one exercise bike, taking it up a league to 4 star, when it has tiny poorly maintained rooms.

Certainly as a business traveller I could not have found better to meet my needs, and consider myself very fortunate and look forward to both staying here more as well as using the facilities once I am fully established here.
