The 5th of November is almost here, so here is our annual guide to Bonfire Night in Guernsey for you, with information on local public firework displays and some firework safety tips.

Firework Safety

If you are helping to organise or run a public event, or holding your own private fireworks display, please be aware of the following safety tips to help you stay safe at all times:

• Obey local laws and customs. If fireworks are not legal where you live, please do not use them. In Guernsey please be aware that for 2017 local people are requested to only hold private fireworks displays on the following evenings: 3rd, 4th or 5th November 2017.

• Use fireworks outdoors only.

• Use fireworks responsibly - never throw them or aim them at people or property.

• Always have water close to hand, either a hose or bucket.

• Only use fireworks as intended. Do not try to alter them or combine them together.

• Never relight a dud firework that has failed to go off. Wait 20 minutes before returning to the firework and then soak it in a bucket of water.

• Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the person lighting the fireworks, and that person should wear safety glasses.

• Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a "designated lighter" person setting off your fireworks who remains teetotal for the evening.

• Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type. Younger children may wave safer glowsticks instead.

• Do not ever use homemade fireworks or other illegal explosives - they can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the local police or fire station.

Animal Safety

Please be aware that fireworks terrify pets and other animals, so please follow the GSPCA animal friendly firework code to protect your pets and the local wildlife. Please visit the following page at the GSPCA website for full details:
