Following the success of our first Grow Bake Off last year, we are asking local bakers to hone their culinary skills and support a good cause at the same time.

Following the success of our first Grow Bake Off last year, we are asking local bakers to hone their culinary skills and support a good cause at the same time.

Last summer 12 businesses, four Charities and Deputy Peter Roffey, representing the deputies, were invited to take part in the Grow Bake Off which was judged at the North Show.

Now, to celebrate their 40th year Grow is encouraging 40 local organisations and individuals to take part in this year’s challenge.  Contestants will be asked to create a bake, which includes at least one culinary vegetable locally grown, and bring it to the Grow marquee at the West Show 14th August for the grand judging

Karen Blanchford, Grow’s CEO said,  ‘Last year’s event attracted some really exciting, unusual and very tasty entries, ranging from a Parsnip and Maple Syrup Cake to Mediterranean Vegetable & Feta Cheese Pies.   We are asking organisations to choose their Ace Baker through in-house competitions again this year.   We would be delighted to come along to the judging with a member of our Crew to join in or just meet the bakers. Getting out into the community with members of our team plays a major role in helping to build confidence among the Crew and introduce them to different environments and experiences.’

This year’s competition is sponsored by M&S Guernsey. Their Head, Greg Yeoman said, ‘We are keen to sponsor Grow’s Bake Off again this year, It’s a light-hearted way of supporting the charity and generating some friendly rivalry between the entrants as they showcase their culinary skills and creativity. We encourage all corporate teams, charities and deputies to roll up their sleeves, put on their aprons, and join us for this exciting event.’

Last year’s winner was Nikki Lloyd, representing Leaders and Black Vanilla, with her Root Vegetable Rainbow Cake. Ms Lloyd said, ‘It was a bit stressful, putting the finishing touches to the cake the night before, but I’m so pleased I took part and was really impressed with all the other entries.  Internal Bake Offs among colleagues at work to choose their Ace Baker is a great way of having a bit of fun, getting together and supporting Grow at the same time.’

As well as an overall winner this year, there will be prizes for quirky entries such as most vegetables included, unusual shape and celebrating 40.  Businesses with 50 or more employees will be asked to make a donation of £250 and smaller enterprises, a donation of £100.  Deputies will be asked for a donation of their choice and there will be no charge for other charities taking part.
