What is Parkinson’s?
Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder affecting one in three hundred of us, and most cases have an unknown cause. The symptoms of Parkinson's are largely due damage in the area of the brain that controls movement.
People with the condition may experience tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and balance problems. Not all people with Parkinson's will have all these symptoms but at least two must be present for a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's to be made.
Other non-motor symptoms such as mood changes, lost sense of smell, and changes in bowel and bladder function and disrupted sleep also characterise the condition. As you can imagine, it is often these symptoms which can be more difficult for people with the Parkinson’s – and their families - to adapt to.
Parkinson's is a progressive degenerative condition and, although it may be successfully treated by a range of therapies, it is currently considered incurable. The Cure Parkinson's Trust is determined to change this, fundraising for research to find a cure.
The work of the Trust
Scientists and clinicians can apply for grant funding for research into Parkinson’s.
Linked clinical trials programmes - The current focus is on drugs that are already used to treat other conditions, and applying them to Parkinson’s. This is called ‘drug repositioning’ or ‘repurposing’. Drugs being used have already undergone safety testing and are approved by NICE.
In 2015 there are nine research projects funded by the Trust, examining different possible treatments. Full details are available on the website.
