Cream are one of my favourite bands from the 1960s and one of the huge advantages of having defied substance abuse and remained alive is that all of them are still around making music – including Ginger Baker.
On 17 June, Ginger Baker brings his new tour, Jazz Confusion, to GLive and I’ve been listening to a sample of it on YouTube. It’s a world away from Cream, as you might expect, but you can’t deny that the cream of the drummers is still amongst the best, seventy-three though he may be. Ginger Baker’s current group consists of Pee Wee Ellis, Alec Dankworth and Abass Dodoo. Their African-influenced sounds cover an exciting mix of Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins and sharing their own new material as well. The emphasis is – of course- on the percussion with Ginger Baker and Abass Dodoo side by side for incredible duets that remind us just how far drums can go.
This promises to be a loud, musical and exhilarating night out. Visit the GLive website to book your tickets (prices start at £19.50) or call 0844 7701 797
