Halloween – what is it all about ?
It is essentially a Pagan Festival and it is thought that it most likely originates from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which was a celebration of the end of the lighter part of the year and the beginning of the darker part of the year.
Of course the event has evolved over the years and has become particularly popular in the USA from where some new customs have spread all over the world.
Nowadays the event involves children dressing up in goulish outfits and visiting local households ‘trick or treating’ – this means either giving them sweets to go away or enduring a nasty trick instead. It is customary to create a face from a large pumkin and place a candle inside it and leave it on your doorstep.
At the end of the day it all a bit of fun for the kids at a dark and dreary time of the year and on a positive note it encourages people to meet their neighbours for once ! – there are some special Halloween events locally which are great fun so take a look at our events section for more information.
