The Guildford Shakespeare Company doesn’t just perform Shakespeare: this month, they bring us Oscar Wilde’s most famous play, the Importance of Being Earnest. It’s easy to see how the GSC made this leap into the late nineteenth century – the play is all mistaken identity and quotable lines with everything working out all right in the end; Wilde, like Shakespeare, understood all the necessary components of a great comedy!
The Importance of Being Earnest is now in its second successful week with critics already raving excitedly. One suggests we should “beg, borrow or steal tickets;” high praise indeed but personally I’ll be getting mine from the GSC website! The play is staged in the grounds of Guildford Castle at 7.30pm every night from now until 29 June (this Saturday) with blankets and cushions available for hire and Pimms and all manner of refreshments for sale too.
