Theatre review: Guildford’s Sleeping Beauty
9th December 2010

It’s official, pantomime is here so let the Christmas celebrations begin!

Panto for many is a bit like Marmite.  You either love it or you hate it.  I’m definitely in the ‘yes please’ camp which is why earlier this week I went along to Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre production, Sleeping Beauty.

An all-star cast includes Guildford’s own Peter Gordon (King Gordon) from Eagle Radio, CBeebies Sarah-Jane Honeywell (Beauty) and the tall, dark and extremely handsome Shane Lynch (Prince Charming) of Boyzone fame.

The plot is predictable – as is often the case in pantoland – and the costumes and acting colourful if not slightly garish at times.  However, the overall comedic tone and general escapism and entertainment value rank high as does Prince Charming’s dreamy Irish lilt which is worth a visit on its own…

The slightly daft bathroom scene halfway through is painful to watch, but it’s more than made up for by the most amazing puppetry in the form of the evil dragon.  Spectacular and mesmerising.  Look out for it: I guarantee you’ll be impressed.

Sleeping Beauty is running from 3 December 2010 until 9 January 2011 and makes a great Christmas gift for the kids – young and grown-up!
