Much of the area between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors is predominantly farming and agriculture based, with livestock, forestry and arable crops along with all of the support industries that service them. As a consequence, many of the ancient Towns and Villages were established as Market Towns - however, in more recent times the Towns and Villages have grown in size with people being attracted away from the Cities, as far away as London, thanks to excellent communications links. Indeed, the dual carriageway A19 from Teesside and the North/South A1M motorway both pass through the area, joining up below Thirsk and allowing quick access to the entire Country and beyond thanks to the airports close to Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle plus Doncaster Robin Hood. In addition, the Main North/South Railway Line from London to Edinburgh passes through Hambleton district just to the north of York.
Hambleton and North Dales includes substantial Towns including:
Northallerton is the County Town of North Yorkshire, a market town with many businesses and the County Hall in its midst. This is a very busy thriving town offering many fabulous local businesses, including superb Hotels to accommodate the many visitors from around the UK and from abroad.
Thirsk is another market town that has retained its characteristic cobbled market square. This is the home of best-selling author and veterinary surgeon Alf White, better known as James Herriot. Thirsk bustles with activity and is a delight place to visit in the heart of the beautiful North Yorkshire Countryside. It has excellent road links to the entire country.
Bedale is also a beautiful little market Town that bustles with local enterprise - also known as 'The Gateway to the Dales'
Easingwold is a lovely small market town a few miles South of Thirsk. Easingwold is a pretty, rural town that attracts many visitors.
Between the towns, there are many idyllic villages, ancient sites of interest including Rievaulx Abbey, and the area has great access to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks with superb country walks and pursuits aplenty.
