Nowadays, most of us spend the majority of our waking hours glued to our computer screen, smart phone, tablet or TV monitors. As the hours go by we subject our eyes to harsh, high intensity blue light and glare from the screen. This constant viewing of digital screens can create eye fatigue, dry eyes, blurry vision, and even headaches, leading to the obvious conclusion â staring at a computer screen takes its toll on our eyes. Blue control lenses help protect our eyes and improve our visual experience as we engage in more and more digital consumption.
'As optometrists, we feel it's important to relay the dangers of blue light and the overuse of digital devices'
All digital devices emit blue light, also known as high energy visible light, a type of ultra-violet light (UV) that ranges from 380nm to 200nm. Medicine is just beginning to understand the effects of long-term exposure to this and research is revealing a real concern for visual health as more and more of our time is spent in front of screens.
Light can be beneficial in your everyday life; it is fundamental for vision, colour perception, shapes and details. Blue/turquoise light aids in your overall well-being and sleep/wake cycles, memory and basic mental functioning however, blue light can have a devastating effect on your eyeâs health. Since its energy level is very high compared to other types of light, it is one of the sources of headaches, eyestrain and premature ageing of the eye, i.e. macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.
BlueControl lenses help reflect the blue light emitted by LCD and LED screens preventing eye fatigue, eye strain and even sleeplessness. Children in particular are now being submitted to blue light exposure in far greater numbers than previous generations and should be protected with this lens at all screen work. It is also particularly useful for gamers, anyone using a TV or flat screen PC for long periods, young professionals and office workers.
What is so special about this BlueControl coating?
