The joint government and internet industry body Get Safe Online issued a press release this morning to raise awareness of the activity of criminal gangs conning people into downloading "rogue anti-virus" software.
The scam has been going on for a while but is tricking people in huge numbers. The gangs, operating from eastern europe or the far east run expensive looking and very plausible websites. Users, desperate to protect their machines hand over payment details and other personal information on-line and the download what turns out to be malware. Suddenly a bad situation gets a lot lot worse. The gangs also cold call and con inexperienced webmasters into allowing them to pop up on mainstream sites.
We'd say don't but your anti-virus software online unless you are 100% sure of the website and better still - use trusted local computer experts Chiswick computers to make the situation a lot lot better. At the moment, if you have a health check for any pc then Steve and the team will install reliable AV software in up to three machines for you absolutely FREE.
