According to Cindy Bentley the wetherby town handyman spends at least one day every week picking up rubbish from Scaur Bank and other green space areas in the town, ending up with bags and bags full of litter. This is an issue regularly raised at town council meetings and ward councillors organise litter picks on areas in and around the town which are the responsibility of Leeds City Council.
Bentley poses the questions; what is the matter with us? Why do we think that just dropping our rubbish all over the place is OK? Or is it just that people don’t think?
She said, "The issue was once raised with me by an Australian visitor – she remarked on the amount of litter on grass verges, in parks and on the streets in the UK and asked why we didn’t take more of a pride in our country? A difficult question to answer. I understand that in Australia, they have a Clean Up Australia day."
Pondering whether it is our recently acquired habit of 'grazing' that is to blame, people frequently eating on the move and then disregarding the packaging. Even the local chippy has started to send their staff round the town on weekends to pick up any boxes left lying around.
Why is it so much trouble for people to save their rubbish until they reach a bin, or even take it home with them?
