Making it Happen in Harrogate

Making It Happen in Harrogate has been developed by Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club. The idea’s a simple one. People who need a reasonably-priced item to make a big difference to their lives can apply for funding.

The money comes from a setting-up grant made by the Rotary Club. Thereafter local companies who “want to make a difference” donate a fixed amount on a monthly basis. And it really does work. For instance:

  • Ex-SAS soldier with physical and other problems wants to be able to adapt his new council property to suit his individual needs. We’ve given a stepladder and a cordless drill.
  • A man with mental health issues has just moved and wants to set up an online business. He has managed to get some but not all the household items he needs. We’ve given a small vacuum cleaner as he has a dog, which is an important part of his therapy.
  • A woman with a range of health and mental issues arising from abuse has moved to Harrogate to start a new life. Because her garden has no lights, she imagines threats that aren’t there, which can lead to her fearing to go out of the house at all. We’ve given a set of solar lights which will give her the sense of security she needs.
  • A young mum, survivor of domestic abuse, has re-located to Harrogate with her young son. She has saved and has been able to afford some of the items she needs for her new home but she wants to paint her flat. We’ve given paint and painting equipment.

Rotarian Mike Hammond, who is running the scheme, said “These are the kind of small household items which have made a big difference to the lives of these people. It isn’t the amount spent that’s important. It’s targeting what they specifically need and getting it to them as quickly as possible that can change their lives.”

If you or your company could help by making a regular donation for six months, a year or even longer, then you would make a real difference to people like these who are turning their lives around. If you’d like to know more, please contact
