Pancake Day: its history, a recipe and more...

Did you know that Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is on the 9th February this year? In the USA, and other countries, it’s known as Mardi Gras, celebrated in the form of a carnival and it’s a day where people ‘gorge’ before fasting during Lent.  In places like Brazil, carnival is huge part of their culture.  If you are interested in how other countries celebrate, click here.

Pancake Day is the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent.  Many churches in Harrogate will be organising something around these dates.

Shrove comes from the word ‘shrive’, the meaning being ‘absolution for one’s sins’.  The way to be absolved is by confession or penance.

Harrogate has several lovely cafes who will have pancakes on their menu. However, if you would like to have a go and celebrate in the British custom, here is a recipe for pancakes you can try on Pancake day.

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup of milk

  • 1 egg

Mix the ingredients, add a teaspoon of oil into a small frying pan and add some of the mixture to the pan.  Flip the pancake, if you dare, or find another way to turn it over so both sides are golden.  Then serve with treacle or lemon and sugar or a number of other ways.
