A lovely Summer's eve on Saturday was spent visiting the small but cosy Frazer Theatre in Knaresborough to see the very talented singer-songwriter, Beverley Craven.
She is best known for her 1990 smash hit "Promise Me" (which is one of my favourite songs ever) but there is much more to the delectable Miss Craven than that great song.
Miss Craven was ably supported on stage by the saxophone wizardry of Frank Mead who has appeared on several of her albums including her first album "Beverley Craven" and her most recent recording "Close to Home." Frank also excels on the flute, harmonica and other woodwind instruments and his interraction with Beverley throughout was excellent.
Beverley is back recording and touring again after a long absence when she has raised three daughters, and she has also come through a dark period when she fought breast cancer. Her song "Without Me" was written by her at this time and was addressed to her girls...the lyrics are sad but uplifting and the haunting music so beautiful that there were a few tears in the eyes of the audience when she performed this.
Other highlights of the show were "Rainbow" from her latest album and "Holding On ", "Castle in the Clouds" and the magnificent "Promise Me"all from her first album.
Beverley has an easy charming manner that captivates her audience and the little tales she tells of how each song came to be were interesting and amusing.
Beverley came back after a well deserved ovation to encore with "I Listen to the Rain" a song which is a musical gem. Miss Craven is a real talent and the years she has been missing have been music's loss. She even took time after the show to meet her audience and sign autographs, and it was a pleasure meeting her.
She tours again in the Autumn and will be calling in at Darlington. Don't miss her! Full details can be found on her website at www.beverleycraven.com
Knaresboroughs's Kula Productions gave the good people of the region the chance to hear Miss Craven's beautiful pure voice and this great local team of producers deserve more support as they put on some terrific shows to suit varied musical tastes.Check out their website at www.kula-productions.com to see details of forthcoming shows.
