May In The Garden

You can add some colour to your garden by planting summer bedding plants such as petunias, marigolds, and geraniums. If you're looking to grow your own vegetables, May is the perfect time to plant out tender vegetables such as courgettes, pumpkins, and sweetcorn. You can also plant out dahlias or gladioli to add some vibrant colour to your garden.

Lawn Care: With the warmer weather, your lawn will start to grow more quickly. Mow your lawn regularly, but be careful not to cut it too short as this can damage the grass. If your lawn is looking a bit tired, consider scarifying it to remove any dead grass and moss, and then apply a spring lawn feed to encourage new growth.

Weeding: As the weather warms up, so do the weeds! Keep on top of them by regularly hoeing or pulling them out by hand. Be careful not to disturb any emerging seedlings.

Pruning: May is a good time to prune any spring-flowering shrubs such as forsythia and lilac, as they will have finished flowering. You can also prune any evergreen shrubs to keep them in shape.

Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for pests and diseases, particularly on any young plants. Aphids can be a problem at this time of year

May provides a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, even if you're not a seasoned gardener. After months of chilly weather, it's time to dust off the barbeque and soak up some sunshine in the garden. With three May bank holidays this year, there's ample chance to make the most of any outdoor space you have.
