Springing into Life: Exploring April Opportunities in Your Garden or on Your Balcony

At last we have emerged from winter’s grip and we can look forward to the warm and bright days of spring and summer. However, even though we sometimes get some really warm spells during the days in April, nights can still provide late frosts so your tender plants will still need protecting.

In terms of plants, April is a time of growth and renewal in the garden. Many bulbs and early flowering plants will be in bloom, such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and crocuses. Trees and shrubs will be beginning to produce new leaves and shoots, and some early flowering trees, such as cherry and magnolia, may also be in bloom.

Growing Vegetables:

Sowing seeds

Indoor sown seeds are growing well, and April is the time for starting to sow seeds directly in the garden for summer vegetables and annual flowers.  This does of course depend on the weather and the seeds, so it’s always best to check the seed packet, just to be sure.  It may also be possible to start planting your seedlings (that you started indoors), outdoors if the weather permits.

Plants for small gardens or even just a balcony

If space is limited but you’re still keen to grow fruit, veg or flowers then it doesn’t mean it’s not possible, you just have to be a little creative.

Miniature fruit trees (up to about 6ft. tall) can be grown in pots and tubs as well as many vegetables such as herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and many more.

Don’t forget you can grow vertically by adding supports like a trellis or a wigwam of canes for your plants to grow up. Plants that grow well like this are cucumbers, beans, peas, and even courgettes.

Choose containers that are the right size for the plants you're growing, and make sure they will hold sufficient compost for the support to do its job.  Check for drainage holes to prevent water from pooling in the bottom but also make sure the pots are watered regularly as plants dry out more quickly in pots and baskets.

Even sweetcorn can be grown in a small garden.  Every year, for many more than I can remember I have grown them from seed and then planted out the seedlings in three rows of three (in a square) in a patch only 4ft square and they are always successful in bearing a good amount of cobs.

Consider companion planting

Planting certain plants together can help them thrive and protect each other from pests. For example, marigolds are a natural insect repellent and can be planted between vegetables to help protect them from pests.

Growing Flowers:

Growing flowers on a balcony or in a small garden is a great way to bring some colour and beauty to your outdoor space. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  1. Choose the right plants: The first step in growing flowers on a balcony is to choose the right plants. Consider the amount of sunlight your balcony receives and choose plants that thrive in that environment. Some good choices for balconies include petunias, geraniums, marigolds, and pansies.
  2. Use the right containers: Like growing vegetables, when growing flowers on a balcony, you'll need to use suitable containers to hold the soil and the plants and supports if you’re using them.
  3. Use the right soil: When planting your flowers, make sure to use soil that is appropriate for the type of plants you're growing. You can find special potting mixes at your local garden centre that are designed for container gardening.
  4. Fertilize regularly: To keep your flowers healthy and thriving, fertilize them regularly with a balanced fertilizer. You can find fertilizers that are specifically designed for container plants.
  5. Prune and deadhead: To encourage your plants to produce more flowers, it's important to prune and deadhead them regularly.

Spring cleaning the garden:

April is a good time to give the garden a spring clean, clearing away any dead leaves and debris from the winter, and preparing beds and borders for the growing season ahead. It's also a good time to start feeding plants with a balanced fertilizer, and to begin watering more frequently as the weather warms up.

Overall, April is an exciting time in the garden, as the signs of spring become more and more evident with each passing day. By following these suggestions, you can enjoy a beautiful and productive garden in even the smallest of spaces.
