The Great Storm Of 1987 In Hertford

It’s been 26 years since the great storm of 1987, which saw huge parts of the UK devastated by a hurricane that destroyed buildings, cars and public places in droves. Tonight, the UK has been warned that similar winds will hit, and we need to be prepared!

However, instead of issuing advice about something I’m hardly qualified to advise on, I’m going to reminisce about what I remember from 1987, when the great storm hit Hertford.

At the time I was 5 years old, in my first term at St Josephs on North Road and was living on Molewood Road in a house that backs onto the field next to Beane Road, so you can appreciate my memories are somewhat vague!

The one main memory is fences, and lots of them just destroyed by the winds. I remember standing in the back garden looking at where my neighbour’s fences should be and seeing into at least 3 or 4 gardens! I also remember numerous trees blown over and blocking the way to school, and homes with large gaps where roof tiles should have been!

As I’ve said, my memories are hardly vivid, but I certainly remember the devastation and disruption the great storm caused. Hopefully tonight and tomorrow won’t be nearly as bad, but if it is, remember to keep yourself and loved ones indoors and out of the weather!

What can you remember of the great storm of 1987 as it ripped through Hertford? Do you have any photos? Please feel free to share them on our Facebok page.

Thanks for reading, and stay safe!
