John Hampden Grammar School

Our primary aim is to encourage each student to be a self-confident, inquiring, tolerant, positive young man, a well-rounded character with an independent mind, an individual who respects the differences of others. By the time he leaves JHGS, we want each boy to have that true sense of self-worth which will enable him to stand up for himself and for a purpose greater than himself, and, in doing so, to be of value to society The ethos, developed over many generations, is unique. It is based upon mutual respect, high expectations and support for one another. At JHGS we aim for excellence in everything we do, be it academic performance, sporting or cultural achievement or the way we develop leadership and team skills. Exceptional standards, breadth, balance and self-confidence typify JHGS students. We are proud of our commitment to boys’ education, structuring our lessons and provision to meet the specific needs and uncover the potential of our young men. Almost all our students stay at the school to complete A Levels where we consistently dominate national and local league tables especially in “value added” performance at A Level. Ofsted “outstanding”, national leaders in digital learning, the competitions we win, the sporting success, the annual world tours and expeditions we undertake, the musical productions we produce, the high levels of participation in sport and the excellence of our sports teams are all testament to the success of the school. From the website and prospectus you will gain some understanding of life at JHGS but it is only by visiting that you will appreciate the calm, focused, friendly and purposeful atmosphere that distinguishes this remarkable school.
