Stairway Renovation or Repair

Rob undertakes many carpentry and joinery tasks in all sorts of situations in both domestic settings (eg installations of bedrooms and bathrooms, furniture manufacture and general carpentry work) and also commercial maintenance work. I know that this particular job has been particularly satisfying for him and really enabled him to make full use of his carpentry and joinery skills.

The following is Rob’s brief commentary and photographic diary of this excellent job, which has had a dramatic impact on this home ….

This was a most interesting and of course substantial job for me as a craftsman to undertake and the end result was also very rewarding. The property owners had decided to modernise the original stairway, which was a post and rail construction, a style that wouldn’t now be used as it doesn’t comply with current day building regulations (see image 1). Having discussed the task with the owners and quoted for the work they commissioned me to design and install the new stairway.

Having measured up, designed and pre-manufactured the component parts in my workshop, the first task on site was to remove the existing rails and posts before fitting the new posts and handrail (see images 2 and 3). After that it was time to fit the new spindles (image 4).  Finally, with all the spindles and post caps in place, all the construction work is done (see image 5). All that remains now is for the finishing wood treatment to be applied. Hopefully, with the owner’s permission, I will be able to post another ‘finished photograph’ once the wood has been treated and hallway is complete.

The satisfaction for me as a craftsman is in the design, the manufacture of all the components and finally the installation of this fully bespoke stairway. Of course there is also the pleasure of being able to stand back on such a big job and see a job well done. Not all my work has such a dramatic effect in what (in this case after all) is a central focus of this home. For this reason this job has been a particularly pleasing task for me to undertake and see the result of my efforts.

What the property owner had to say about Rob McVey's work ....

"We originally commissioned Robert to refurbish our 1970s staircase and replace the first floor bedroom and bathroom doors.  Nine weeks later Rob has now, at our request, also replaced all the skirting boards and architraves in the house and installed new bi-folding doors, which we believe is the testament to his skill as a craftsman and our confidence in his ability to provide a first class job. We have no hesitation in recommending Robert McVey Carpentry and Joinery Services."
