We (3 adults) arrived less than 40min before closing, but decided to go ahead with the tour. We were told it would be a bit of a rush and we were the only ones there. The guide and narrator was really excellent. We were quite engrossed all the time. I could go on. Worth every penny. Can't recomment enough.

No matter how well you think you know the Museum and however many times you've visited, there's always something new to discover. It's staffed and maintained almost entirely by volunteers, and a friendlier place you can't imagine. If you're using one of the nearby public car-parks, make sure you pay for at least 3 hours!

A school museum in historic buildings including the great monitorial schoolroom for 300 pupils and their one Master, the very beginnings of education for everyone. A great place for everyone,especially young people, parents and grandparents, to visit. Lots to see, to try out and to talk about together. Our grandchildren aged 5 and 7 love visiting the British Schools Museum during the school holidays. There are lots of interesting activities for them to take part in, like toy- making. I wish museums had been like this in my day!

Me and my partner thought that this was an excellent museum and definitely worth a visit if you are in hitchin or even the hertfordshire area! It is within a beautiful building which looks deceivingly small from the outside but that is actually hiding hours of interesting and exciting rooms and buildings. The staff are clearly dedicated to the museum and obviously love their job which makes it even more pleasurable to experience. There is a small little cafe on site where you can have a nice cup of tea and a snack.

Two or three hours to spare ? Then visit this unique museum and be taken back in time, the headmasters house is a must and finish with a cup of tea in the cafe.

This museum is more than a museum; it is an experience. Not only can you tour classrooms, from an enormous monitorial schoolroom, to a galleried classroom, to a wartime classroom, but you can also take part in lessons on certain days. Our grandchildren love dressing up in Victorian aprons or collars and enjoy trying out slates and dipping pens. The volunteers are really friendly and welcoming, and they clearly feel passionate about the museum. They all seem very knowledgable. You get a good cuppa in the cafe too!

It has to be the staff who definitely reflect the enthusiasm of the manager. A museum can be just a petrified shadow of the things preserved within, but here the place hums with the blood of the staff.

Because of it's uniqueness, The British Schools Museum is a very interesting place to visit. Situated in historic Hitchin, there are plenty of fascinating things to see and a welcome cup of tea can be purchased from the on site cafe.

We have enjoyed many visits to The British Schools Museum and find the exhibitions interesting in their variety. We love to take our friends and family there.We often pop in to the cafe to sample the scrumptious cheese scones when we're in town on a Saturday morning.

You'd never guess from the outside of this museum tucked away on Queen Street in Hitchin what wonders there are to discover inside. Firstly, it's huge! There are four amazing classrooms depicting school life from the pre-Victorian right through to the late 1960s. Then there are the Headmaster's House, Discovery Room, Exhibition Room, cafe and shop. You're going to need half a day at least to see it all!

I visited last year (2013) and thought it was wonderful. Much bigger than it looks from outside and really interesting old classrooms and displays inside. Grandchildren loved it too - lots of activities for them.

Looking for somewhere to take visitors? This is a must. We have taken foreign and Uk visitors to see this gem of a museum. You can happily spend 2 hours here and everyone is so friendly and helpful. People of all ages will enjoy a visit.
