Rhythms of the World engages with people of different ages, races, backgrounds and abilities and they now hope to share the fun of the Festival beyond the event by adding an outreach programme, ‘Music in Your Community’ to what they do. They want to include people who are not able to attend the Festival and do something positive for the whole of the local community. Here is what they have lined up for this July:

  • Two Brazilian musicians, Fabio Allman and Pepe Barcellos, will perform with samba band Toque Tambor at Lavender Fields in Hitchin at a celebration event hosted by Leonard Cheshire Disability. Toque Tambor’s Musical Director, J P Courtney will lead a samba drumming workshop beforehand so that the 9 disabled young people resident there can take part and share music making with friends.
  • Tabla player Sukhi Rayat will dazzle around 150 pupils with his Indian drumming performances at Oughton Primary School in Westmill and St. Paul’s Walden Primary School in Whitwell.
  • A quartet from Hitchin Symphony Orchestra will entertain around 50 service users at Nightingale House Day Centre with classical favourites and music written in a Bollywood style.

If you would like to host a visit from an arts group or you are interested in performing as part of ‘Music in Your Community’ for a community group or school in 2011, please contact ROTW volunteer Clare Sulch at claresulch@yahoo.com.
