Nine comedians took to the stage at Woodside Hall in the Lastminute Comedy New Act of the Year competition on 6 April
It turned out that the judges couldn’t agree on their top three comedians out of the nine who entertained a capacity crowd at Woodside Hall. The winner was Jason Arthur, who put on a great bit of stand-up with the inevitable rude bits but a nicely-structured set. Second came Damian Kingsley but it was third place that caused the judges some disagreement. In the end, joint third were Claire Stroud and Paul McMullen.
The audience loved the diversity – three women and six men, a mixture of ages and styles – and the competition probably didn’t matter as much as the jokes. As usual, Paul B Edwards proved a suave, sophisticated, MC (well, kind of) and kept the evening moving along.
For anyone else who hasn’t experienced comedy the lastminute style, it’s worth paying a visit. One of Hitchin’s attractions has always been the range of entertainment on offer and it’s worth a look at www.lastminutecomedy.com to see when their next event is happening. And no, I’m not on commission.
